When I was overweight and unhealthy, there were a lot of things I wanted to change. First and foremost, I wanted to have more energy and feel more like myself so I could go about my life like I used to. But I also wanted to fit into my clothes again, as well as reduce the extra weight that had been added to my face and neck area.

Getting rid of face fat may sound great for someone who wants to lose weight, but the sad truth is, you can't spot-reduce fat anywhere on your body, including (and especially) your face.

However, it is possible! You just have to lose weight everywhere so that your hard work eventually reaches your face. These are the five things I did to lose face fat and feel more confident and healthier than ever.

1. I Stayed in a Healthy Calorie Deficit

Losing weight, at the end of the day, is a numbers game. You have to be in a calorie deficit in order to shed pounds and lose fat everywhere, including your face. I cleaned up my diet, cutting out all packaged and processed foods, and lowered my daily calorie intake.

I didn't count my macros every day, but I did cut out excess snacks and second portions. That was enough to be in a calorie deficit and lose weight steadily over the course of several months.

2. I Strength Trained Regularly

I love lifting weights, so it wasn't hard for me to increase the number of strength-training sessions I did each week. Weightlifting helps you burn more calories throughout the day, build lean muscle, and shed fat faster. This sped up my weight-loss process, which helped my face lean out sooner.

3. I Ran 3 Times a Week

I'm not the biggest fan of doing cardio, but it's an important part of the weight-loss process. I chose to run three times a week (as well as a hike or cycling session), which was a fantastic way to get my heart rate up and burn a lot of calories. I could feel the weight coming off a little bit faster when I upped my cardio sessions.

4. I Slept 7 to 8 Hours Every Night

People often forget how important sleep is, especially if you're trying to get rid of body fat. Because I was more active than ever, yet still busy with work and my personal life, I knew I needed to get plenty of sleep every night. Not only did this help me lose weight faster, but it reduced bloating and stress, which helped me keep off the extra water weight in my face.

5. I Significantly Cut Down on Alcohol

I've never been much of a drinker, so this wasn't a hard task to achieve. Every time I drink alcohol, I wake up with a puffy face and a sluggish disposition. So I decided to cut out the empty calories and go without booze for a while.

I would have the occasional drink if there was a special occasion, but the lack of alcohol helped me lose weight faster, and I never had bags under my eyes or swollen cheeks. My face slimmed down pretty quickly after that, and I loved the reflection I saw every morning.
