I remember going with my friend to get a tattoo. It was the first of her tattoos and she wasn’t the least bit scared of the pain. I watched as the needle entered her skin... and I nearly fainted.
“I’m never getting a tattoo!” I told her.
Well, never say never — 20 or so tattoos later, and I’m still itching for some more. It really is like eating potato chips; you can’t just have one!
(Actually, some people can, but not me. I’m hooked!)

When my husband and I got married, instead of getting wedding bands, we decided to get matching tattoos on our ring fingers. And of course, it didn’t stop there. I have a long distance friend I’ve been close with for more years than I can count, and although we couldn’t go together to get our friendship tattoos, we put our heads together to decide on a matching design and then went to have them done on the same day in our own states.
It’s an amazing feeling to share a matching tattoo with someone, as it signifies a connection you may not be able to get otherwise.
Don’t get me wrong. I'm well aware that some people get matching tattoos and wind up regretting them later, especially celebrities, but I think that for most of us regular folks, it’s an exciting thing to do and I can say from experience that it brings two people together in a truly special way.
Recently, two of the stars of my favorite show, Game of Thrones, got their own set of matching tattoos.
Last Fall, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, who play Arya Stark and Sansa Stark respectively, had the date “07.08.09” tattooed on their forearms in peach. Both are from the UK, so the date actually reads August 7, 2009, which is the day they both found out they had been cast on Game of Thrones. They’ve since become the closest of friends, so it makes sense they wanted to express this ultimate level of friendship.
