Feeling overwhelmed is a normal part of life, but people who try to hold everything together on their own are even more likely to feel that way.

When someone reaches that point where they just can’t handle it anymore, they usually realize it subconsciously first. Even if they aren’t aware of what’s happening, other people will notice how the things they say are changing.

People say 8 phrases when they can’t do it all anymore:

1. ‘I can’t keep taking care of everyone’

When you care about someone, it’s natural to want to help them. We’re all meant to support each other. But it becomes a problem when that support isn’t given out fairly.

There are plenty of “people who can’t tell when they have done enough for others,” according to psychologist Ellen Kirschman, PhD. Because they give and never take, they start to resent the people they love.

That’s not a sustainable way to live. They’ll realize they’re going overboard eventually and let their worries slip into conversation.

2. ‘I just need some time alone’

Alone time helps people regulate their emotions, so it’s important for everyone to fit it in, even if they’re a social butterfly. There’s a big difference between just wanting to spend a few peaceful minutes alone and wanting to block the world out, though.

People who can’t do it all anymore usually fall into the second category. Being alone means they won’t be around anyone who can ask for their help. Their quiet time is true escapism and not just a chance to recharge.

3. ‘Don’t worry; I’m used to it’

There’s a good chance that other people will start noticing someone is doing too much before they realize it themselves. To put them at ease, they’ll minimize their very real struggles and act like it’s nothing to worry about.

They might be used to doing it all, but that doesn’t make it OK. No one can carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t be honest about what they’re going through.

When someone feels overwhelmed and tells other people not to worry, it’s basically a giant red flag that their concerns are totally valid.

4. ‘Maybe next time’

If someone can’t keep up with everything that’s on their plate, they’ll start eliminating the things that don’t feel necessary first. Even though spending time with friends and family is important for everyone’s well-being, it can feel a lot less urgent than other things that need to be done.

That’s why people will start to withdraw socially when they know they’re doing too much. It feels like the safest thing to let go of.

It seems logical to lighten your load any way you can when you’re in this situation. But only doing serious things and not leaving time for fun isn’t healthy either.

5. ‘I’ll get to it when I can’

Because of the effect chronic stress has on the body, it makes people feel totally drained of energy. Obviously, someone can’t keep doing it all when they don’t have any energy left.

Instead of getting things done as quickly as possible, they’ll start putting things off. They just don’t have the capacity anymore, so they don’t have another choice.

Procrastination just leads to more problems over time, though. It’s a vicious cycle that they’ll struggle to escape from.

6. ‘I stopped caring’

Technically, someone who needs to cut back on how much they’re doing is going to have to stop caring so much. But it’s easy for that feeling to go too far.

It’s hard to stay motivated when it feels like nothing matters. Not caring can also be a sign of deeper mental health issues. That can make it hard to do anything at all. This might feel liberating at first, but it won’t be long before it’s an obvious obstacle.

7. ‘At least it’s done’

It feels good to be able to check something off of your to-do list. But when someone has taken on way too much, they’ve probably fallen victim to toxic productivity, meaning they think they should always be doing something and never resting.

Once they hit their limit, they won’t get the same satisfaction from getting things done. Instead of feeling accomplished, they’ll just be grateful they don’t have to worry about it anymore. It’s like the things they do will lose their meaning because of their frustration.

8. ‘I feel like I don’t have a choice’

Most people want to be in control of as much of their lives as they possibly can. It brings a sense of comfort when everything feels so uncertain.

While no one is in control of everything, we all have power over certain things. But someone who feels like they can’t do it all anymore will spiral out of control until they feel totally powerless.

Because everyone expects them to be there for them, they’ll feel stuck. They don’t want to let them down or abandon them, so they keep showing up until they have nothing left to give at all.
