It’s usually not hard to tell if you’re talking to someone who’s super smart. Instead of discussing complex topics like you would expect, their intelligence shows up in the way they think.

There are many signs of how sharp they are, but these traits tend to show up most in almost every conversation they have.

People who have extremely quick minds and high intelligence usually show off these traits in casual conversations

Everyone has been through the experience of trying to follow what someone else is saying while silently asking, “Is there a point to this?” Sometimes it’s hard to tell where a conversation is going and why it’s even relevant in the first place.

Highly intelligent people don’t struggle with this quite as much. Because they think at a faster speed, they’re able to fill in the blanks on their own and realize what’s really being said. They never need a long, detailed explanation because their brain can make those connections on its own.

2. They use simple words to explain complicated things

Most people assume that smart people use big words. It would really be more accurate to say they know big words, because they actually speak in pretty simple terms.

They’re not just book smart, but also smart enough to know their audience. Even when they explain something that’s hard to understand, they make it as accessible as possible to get their point across. This actually makes them sound even more knowledgeable while also not giving the same vibe as a grad school lecture.

3. They don’t always answer right away

Our brains are always anticipating what will be said next in a conversation, so we’re ready with a response without having to put a lot of thought into it. People who are really intelligent don’t mind thinking for a few extra seconds, though.

They want to contribute to the conversation in a meaningful way, so when they’re asked a question, they aren’t afraid to hesitate before answering. They care about giving honest and well-thought-out answers more than moving the conversation along as quickly as possible.

The stereotype that the smartest people are also boring couldn’t be further from the truth. Being funny has been linked to having a higher IQ, so it is possible to be both smart and funny.

But their sense of humor might be a bit different. Instead of cracking the same kind of jokes that everyone else does, their humor will be based on their cleverness and wit. They could use wordplay to their advantage or even say something a little nerdy to get a laugh.

5. They ask specific questions

Quick thinkers aren’t the kind of people who nod along while someone else talks and say something related every now and then. They’re active participants in the conversation. But instead of just talking about themselves, they ask really good questions.

This is an important skill to have because it lets the person asking the question learn more while also showing the other person that they genuinely care. This group asks insightful questions that go beyond the surface to get to the heart of the discussion, rather than just random things anyone could come up with.

6. They can easily move from one topic to another

There are obviously some situations where it’s helpful to be able to politely change the subject of a conversation. People with quick minds are good at that, but they also have the ability to seamlessly transition between topics to make their point.

For example, something that someone said might remind them of something they read last week. Maybe it’s not directly related, but it’s linked in a way that makes them want to bring it up. Moving from one topic to another happens naturally for them when it could be awkward for others.

7. They’re comfortable disagreeing with the crowd

When someone is talking with a group of people, and they all seem to share the same opinion on a certain subject, it feels easiest to just go along with what they’re saying, even if they don’t agree. This is where intelligent people are different from the average person.

Harvard professor Julia Minson explained that we try to avoid disagreement because we think it’s the same thing as conflict. True conflict comes from judging someone as less intelligent or biased because of a disagreement.

Despite obviously having superior intelligence, these people don’t look down on others like that. They don’t have a problem bringing up a different point of view, and they don’t make it personal. It’s all like a friendly debate to them.

Trying to talk to someone who dominates the conversation is super frustrating. Sometimes, this is their natural instinct, while at other times, it has more to do with the situation. You can usually trust that smart thinkers won’t do that.

They know there should be a balance in the conversation and that they need to spend time listening to truly understand the other person. Just because they have a lot of knowledge doesn’t mean they feel the need to share all of it. Instead, they let the conversation flow naturally and evenly.
