Life can sometimes feel like a popularity contest where you either couldn't care less if people want to be your friend or you're worried constantly about being liked.

People who've reached a point where they're totally over seeking admiration from others are on a different level. They’re comfortable with who they are without approval from anyone else, and they make that clear with the things they say on a regular basis.

People usually say these phrases when they couldn't care less about being liked:

1. ‘That’s just who I am’

This phrase sends a very clear message, and it’s an incredibly frustrating one. Plenty of people are truly afraid of trying to change, even when it would be good for them, but this is a different kind of stubbornness.

This is the kind of thing people say when they hurt someone and don’t want to take accountability for it. Instead of apologizing, they’re arguing that they couldn’t help it. It’s pretty obvious that they aren’t worried about making people like them.

2. ‘I’m not going to lie to make you feel better’

Even the most honest people are willing to bend the truth a bit to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. That’s not a priority for people who don’t care about being liked.

They’re willing to tell the truth, even when it’s hard to hear. Because they aren’t trying to be popular, they also don’t try to soften the blow. It’s not their problem if people hate them for their honesty.

3. ‘I really don’t want to do that’

Most people try to conform to whatever group they’re in so they have a better chance of being liked. That may mean doing something they really don’t want to just to get along with everyone else.

If someone isn’t worried about being liked, this won’t be a problem for them. When they get invited to do something that sounds like the worst possible way they could spend their time, they’ll be up front about it. If they don’t want to do it, they aren’t going to.

4. ‘Go ahead and be mad about it’

Even if someone isn’t a people-pleaser, they still probably won’t want to upset someone. It’s common for people to be so afraid of confrontation that they avoid talking about real problems and stuff their feelings down instead.

That doesn’t even cross someone’s mind when they don’t need to be liked. They’re going to be authentic whether it ruffles feathers or not. Instead of apologizing for making someone mad, they’ll shrug it off and move on like it doesn’t matter, because it really doesn’t to them.

5. ‘You don’t have to agree’

Disagreement has become something that many try to avoid at all costs. It can actually be a good way to come up with creative solutions to problems, but people just don’t know how to do it respectfully while really listening, which makes it feel uncomfortable.

The funny thing about people who don’t need to make you like them is that they don’t mind disagreement, and they also don’t really care about having a discussion that will bring everyone together. They just say they’ll agree to disagree and don’t make it a big deal.

6. ‘I’m leaving now’

It seems kind of rude for someone to say they’re leaving a gathering out of nowhere, which is why people will only do it when they don’t worry about others’ opinions.

Anyone who wants other people’s approval would never be so abrupt, but that’s not their concern. If they’re not having fun or they’re tired, they’ll just leave. The etiquette is questionable, but that’s probably not a word that ever crosses their mind.

7. ‘That really hurt my feelings’

We all get our feelings hurt regularly, but it’s something we usually try to cover up. It’s like we don’t want to make someone feel awkward, even if they caused the pain in the first place.

Anyone who doesn’t care about being liked has no problem telling it like it is, however. The trouble with being brutally honest like this is that it can easily become an excuse for saying hurtful things. They aren’t worried about that, though, especially when they were hurt first.

8. ‘I know this is an unpopular opinion’

Even though some people wouldn’t admit to it, wanting to be popular is totally normal. It makes sense because popular people are usually more successful both personally and professionally, and even healthier overall.

But popularity is pretty much the same thing as likeability, so it’s not a priority for everyone. The people who are fine with not being liked will share their unpopular opinions without hesitation because it won’t mean they’re losing something that actually mattered to them.
