At a certain point, even the most polite people get sick of putting up with bad behavior. When pressure rises at work or home, it becomes harder and harder not to lose your cool. You might be dealing with a coworker who never helps with projects or a spouse who never follows through with their promises. When the pressure of having to handle everything gets to be too much, your patience wears thin, and it becomes far more likely that you'll start saying things you'd never usually say.

Someone who once had patience under pressure would play it cool with people who upset them. If they weren’t contributing, they may have held their tongue and kept moving forward. When this happens constantly, they’ll likely stop caring about how they handle their frustration. The pressure has caught up to them, and they're done sharing their true feelings with people who refuse to listen or help them.

When they say they’re fine, they’re actually not. They’re trying to hide their frustration. This phrase can still cut, especially when delivered with a poor attitude. Typically, they've stayed calm under this pressure before. They’re done being polite because they’re fed up with sharing their feelings and having them ignored.

2. ‘I don’t know anymore’

If someone is sick of staying calm under pressure, they might get easily irritated by people they see as getting in their way. If deadlines or stress make them anxious, the need to be polite might go out the window. They’re sick of being bothered when things are frustrating. Instead, they'll often lash out and say something like this to avoid helping someone else.

Irritability can cause someone’s heart to race. They may also become nauseous or sweaty. These physical symptoms can further shorten their patience, causing them to blow others off instead of approaching them with kindness.

3. ‘I’m not going along with this anymore’

We’ve all been pushed past our breaking point. When you're under pressure, it takes a lot to keep a clear head and focus on the task at hand. If someone makes things difficult, snapping back can become the default reaction, especially when they’ve been notoriously polite while continuously being disrespected.

It can be hard to stifle anger under pressure. Sometimes those feelings become overwhelming, and we give in, no matter how hard we try not to. Staying polite no longer matters when you’re feeling especially angry.

There are few things I hate more than someone speaking to me with a bad attitude. If you’re anything like me, you want to snap, but realize you should probably keep your cool. Once someone loses the capacity to stay polite, they don't care anymore. They’ll say exactly what they’re thinking without feeling guilty. Finally, they are putting that person in their place.

Many people act overly polite to avoid conflict, but that doesn't necessarily work. Being too polite can make people feel like a doormat, and people are constantly walking all over them. When they’ve had enough, they’ll finally call them out.

5. ‘I don’t care how it makes me look’

Most of us were raised to be polite. Saying things like please and thank you was a basic requirement because our parents cared about how other people perceived us. When someone gets sick of staying polite when they’re under stress, they might stop caring what others think, and they'll often say that they don’t care how they look to others.

Worrying about what others think about you can be all-consuming. When people wear on someone’s patience, they may drop the charade. They struggle to remain calm when they’re constantly pushed to their limits in stressful situations.

6. ‘That’s not my problem anymore’

Polite people sometimes feel compelled to take on other people’s problems. They can be fixers, always doing what they can to help others around them. However, this can take a toll on their mental health. When they feel pressured to figure everything out for someone else, they lose their patience and get to a point where approaching people with kindness isn’t a priority anymore.

This can be a sign of compassion fatigue, when kindness is slowly draining them. Before, they’d put others before themselves. Now that the pressure is overwhelming, they can’t keep dealing with it. Sometimes, being direct rather than polite is their only way out.

7. ‘Figure it out for yourself’

Have you been pressured to get something done at work only to be bombarded by another person’s questions and requests? This happens far too often. You need to meet a deadline, and no one respects that. If someone thinks they have to remain polite all the time, they're likely to break at some point. Suddenly, they’re snapping at their coworkers and feeling like they’re not cut out to handle pressure because they can’t keep their cool.

It’s okay to lose your patience sometimes. People who constantly put others' feelings before their own can easily become stretched thin. When they feel taken advantage of, their capacity for staying polite goes down the drain.

Boundaries are the most important way to keep people from using us until we’re completely drained. Polite people might struggle to enforce boundaries. They want to be kind and compassionate, not firm and grumpy, but once they become sick of this behavior, setting boundaries becomes essential. They might say what’s on their mind without considering others.

Someone who enforces their boundaries might shut down conversations that are no longer serving them. Under pressure, discussions can cause unnecessary added stress. They put their foot down and demand that the conversation end.

9. 'We can talk when you’re done acting like that’

Unfortunately for me, I am prone to giving people second, third, and maybe even 100 chances. When their bad behavior continues, I act surprised as if they haven’t done it a million times before. I put up with people being rude to me and might even apologize to them for how they’re treating me. It’s an exhausting cycle. I wish I could tell them to stop talking to me until they could communicate kindly, but I am the pushover of all pushovers.

When someone reaches their breaking point, behavior like that usually changes. They may be well aware that reacting poorly can cause more issues, but they are done being disrespected and don’t care how their confrontation comes across.
