Having a strong moral compass isn’t something that people go around bragging about, but it’s still easy to notice in the ways they act differently.

We all have a moral compass that guides our choices based on what we believe is right and wrong. People with a moral compass that’s particularly strong usually have no problem forming close relationships because everyone wants to be around them.

When someone has a strong moral compass, they usually have these obvious traits:

Those with a strong moral compass aren’t the kind of people who change their behavior based on who they’re with. Everyone deserves respect in their eyes, regardless of how much money they have or how influential they are.

Research has shown that the amount of power someone has changes the way they act. It usually changes the way that other people act, too. But having a strong moral compass means having enough integrity to realize that people’s worth doesn’t depend on external factors.

2. They’re true to their word, even when it’s not easy

Everyone knows what it’s like to make a promise to someone and then regret it later when it’s no longer convenient. The thing is, a promise isn’t about the person who makes it. The stronger someone’s moral compass is, the more they understand that.

People usually do want to stay true to the promises they make, but it’s easier said than done. There are plenty of people who go back on their word to simplify their lives. That just means they’ll stand out for all the wrong reasons.

3. They do what’s right regardless of who’s watching

One of the biggest indicators that someone has a strong moral compass is demonstrating a high level of integrity. And, really, there’s no better way to describe integrity than as choosing to do what’s right all the time, even when no one is there to see it.

People who follow this pattern are extremely consistent. Just like they don’t act differently around different people, they also don’t make decisions based on who’s present. They want to prove they can live their values to themselves more than anyone else.

4. They never take advantage of other people

Think about an employee who recognizes their co-workers’ weaknesses and then uses that against them to make themselves look better. That’s a really common example of people taking advantage of each other, maybe without even realizing it.

When one person uses another, it usually comes from their selfishness and their disregard for other people’s feelings. That’s the exact opposite of someone who has a strong moral compass. They would never hurt someone like that, especially for their own gain.

5. They’re willing to be the only one who does the right thing

It’s usually most comfortable to go along with what everyone else is doing. But those who have a strong moral compass care more about doing what lines up with their values instead of what’s easiest.

The right choice isn’t the same as the popular choice most of the time. People have to live with the choices they make, though, so it’s better to be at peace with their conscience than the crowd.

6. They consider how their actions affect others, not just themselves

It’s pretty natural for humans to think of themselves first. That’s not a bad thing as long as they don’t take it too far, which never happens for people who have a strong moral compass.

Every action has an intent and an impact. A lot of people think all they can control is the intent, but they can also influence the impact for the better if they think about how other people will be affected by their choices. Caring about more than themselves shows how strong their values are.

It’s not easy for most people to admit when they’re wrong, but people with a strong moral compass are willing to swallow their pride and put others’ feelings before their own. They offer a sincere apology and accept responsibility for what they’ve done.

What’s really interesting is that they might do this even when they don’t feel like they’re in the wrong. If they hurt someone, their top priority is always to repair that relationship. That doesn’t mean they’re lying. They’re just validating people’s emotions.
