While Gen Z and Gen Alpha have never known life without the Internet, older generations have seen it evolve dramatically over the course of their lives.

The internet as we know it now emerged in the 1990s, when baby boomers were hard-working professionals, Gen X was in high school and college or just entering the workforce, and millennials were just kids. The ways each of these generations therefore use the internet now vary widely based on their experience and comfort level.

Gen Z, millennials, Gen X, and boomers each use the internet in totally different ways based on when it became available to them.

Younger generations are used to going online for pretty much everything. It's how they've always been able to find answers to their questions, as well as a primary way they've long stayed connected and entertained. People in older generations lived a significant part of their lives without the internet, so using it for those things doesn’t necessarily feel quite as natural to them.

Boomers use the internet to make their lives easier, but not as an integral way of life.

By the time the internet was available to the average person, baby boomers were adults who were solidly into their careers. They made it through school without the option of doing research online, and they didn’t use the internet at work when they first started, because it literally didn't exist.

As boomers have made the internet a more central part of their lives, they’ve become interested in using it to connect with their family and friends. They still use social media much less frequently than younger people, though. They’re also more interested in high-quality content, even if it’s not as easy to consume.

Boomers were already used to life before the internet came along, so they have always seen it as something to add to what they were doing instead of some kind of replacement. They use it to enhance their lives, but they don’t get so caught up in it that they’re constantly looking at a screen.

Gen X is more comfortable with the internet, but they believe they'd be happier without it.

Gen X built a relationship with the internet, which they referred to at first as the World Wide Web, when they were in high school, college, graduate school, and starting their families and professional lives. Many people in this generation did have personal computers at home, and while there was no internet to speak of until they were a little older, many were more comfortable using them than their parents.

Gen X’s attitude toward the internet is balanced somewhere between boomers’ reluctance and younger generations’ full acceptance. They don’t spend every second of their day online, but they also don’t think of social media and search engines as something strange that they have to get used to.

What’s really interesting is how they feel about the internet looking back. In a recent survey, many Gen Xers said they would like to go back to a time before the world was so connected. They know how to use the internet to their advantage, but that doesn’t mean they always enjoy it.

Millennials are savvy internet users who access it for almost every aspect of their lives.

Unlike boomers and Gen X, who had to learn how to incorporate the internet into their lives when it was a completely new invention, millennials were the first generation to grow up with access to it. It obviously wasn’t as advanced as what we’re used to today, but it was still a staple of their lives.

Most of the major social media platforms were created when millennials were pretty young, making them the first group to test them. Although older generations use social media, the fact that millennials were the majority of the first Myspace and Facebook users gives them a different perspective.

Instead of thinking of the internet as something to use every now and then, millennials turned it into a constant part of life. They were the first generation to see the internet as more than just a tool.

Gen Z has never known life without the internet, so they expect to use it all the time.

Gen Z grew up with the internet as millennials did, but not in the exact same way. While millennials were the pioneers of early computers and social media platforms, Gen Z has been able to hold the internet in their hands since they were young because of smartphones and tablets.

There was nothing for them to learn or get used to since it was an inescapable part of life. It’s likely they learned how to scroll while learning how to talk. They started using social media at an earlier age than any other generation, and they turn to it for everything, including connecting with their friends and reading the news.

Gen Z gets criticized for using the internet too much, which isn’t really fair. There are serious concerns about how it’s affecting their mental health, but it’s also just a normal part of life for them. Why would they do anything differently when that’s what they’re used to?
