Socially Unaware People Do 7 Odd Things In Casual Conversations
Diva Plavalaguna | Pexels Sometimes, we don’t know how to act in social situations, especially in group settings.
When people act like this, it doesn't mean they're socially awkward, just that they may be socially unaware. They don't quite understand unwritten social rules, and unfortunately, that can rub people the wrong way.
Socially unaware people do these odd things in conversations
1. Pushing people to stay when they want to leave early

Sometimes, something comes up or we get tired and need to go home. Usually, when people give an excuse for leaving early, there may be some protests from other guests, but everyone understands.
But socially unaware people keep pushing them to stay, regardless of their desire to leave. Whether it’s because they want to continue a conversation or don’t understand why they would go prematurely, their requests make the other person feel uncomfortable. They think they're coming off as concerned, but really, it appears aggressive more than assertive.
2. Asking questions but not listening to the response
Active listening is an important skill for anyone to have. It strengthens your relationships in all aspects of your life.
As psychologist Dianne Grande explained, "We all need to be heard by those closest to us, regardless of whether we’re right or wrong, and rational or irrational. Whatever the circumstances, the process of listening has a high likelihood of transforming the relationship in a positive way."
Connecting to someone may also involve asking questions. And while good listeners wait and stay interested in what they're saying, a socially unaware person doesn't quite care about the response.
Maybe they're nervous or have a hard time focusing. But for the person they're speaking to, it makes them feel unheard and disrespected.
3. Laughing only once other people have
People with social anxiety may fear that other people can tell that they're anxious. So, they try to blend in and make sure they aren't doing anything that can be perceived as wrong. Sometimes, this backfires.
They may end up not listening to what was said, and miss an opportunity to laugh with everyone else, which robs them of a bonding moment. Instead, they laugh once others have because they think this is what they're supposed to do.
4. Only talking about themselves
Socially unaware people do this without realizing, and it's the easiest way to kill a conversation. People want to talk about themselves, as it stimulates the part of the brain linked to value and motivation.
It feels good to talk about ourselves, but it can turn people off when the conversation is only focused on us. For folks who do this in conversations, it's an easy way to push people away before even getting to know them.
5. Continuing conversations after they've ended

When there's a lull or it's clear the conversation has ended, most people will walk away and be done with it. They'll tell the other person they need to leave or politely admit they don't wish to talk anymore.
Socially unaware people don't realize how rude it is to keep a conversation going despite the other person initiating it being over. They may think it's polite to keep talking. For them, it's tricky because they can't read body language.
6. Asking inappropriate questions
There’s nothing odder than people asking a question that isn’t related to the conversation. Or, they bring up a topic that's awkward and nobody wants to speak on it. It's a complete buzzkill.
It makes everybody uncomfortable, and then someone has to break the silence or change the conversation. Socially unaware people don’t do this on purpose, but their actions make people not want to be around them.
To them, they're asking these questions to get to know someone or add to the conversation, but for others, these questions are intrusive and weird.
7. Not asking for what they want
Plenty of people have texted a friend, wanting to hang out but not having the courage to do so. Instead, they'll skirt around the issue or will just stop responding.
For socially unaware people, they also struggle with asking for what they want. If they need a favor, they hesitate to even bring it up. If they just want to see their friend or an acquaintance they'd like to get to know, they avoid asking.
Whether it’s because they don’t know how to or don’t want to be a burden, it just makes everybody’s lives more difficult.
