Mentally & Emotionally Tired People Usually Say 10 Phrases In Casual Conversation
DC Studio | Shutterstock People have a way of testing our patience. At work and at home, they push our buttons without realizing it, even when they have the best of intentions.
In an era where people feel pressed financially and emotionally pretty much 24/7, it's easy to get completely exhausted, both mentally and emotionally. With so little energy left, you can't blame tired people for crashing out when someone tries their patience, even when that other person may not deserve it.
Phrases mentally and emotionally tired people say in casual conversation
1. 'I don't have the energy for this'

People who are exhausted don't have time or energy for the drama, so count yourself lucky if you hear them tell it to you this directly. They won't play games, but they won't pretend to care.
They aren't in the headspace to have a meaningful conversation. This is why they're blunt with how they feel. Even if it's hard to admit, choosing to lie is way worse. Not only is it wrong, but lying can slowly harm the relationships you cherish most.
This is why tired people choose to be honest. Call them cruel, but they'd rather punch someone with the truth than kiss them with a lie.
2. 'I'm going to head home'

They didn't grow tired overnight. For many, it's been a continuous cycle of giving it their all and getting very little in return. Now, exhausted and frustrated, a go-to phrase tired people love to use is, "I'm going to call this a night" and similar phrases.
No, they aren't just saying this to be dramatic and they're not angry. It's just time for them to leave, whether others are leaving or not.
3. 'I'm so tired of people'

Most people can be kind of annoying from time-to-time. Even if they're the sweetest person on Earth, humans are always going to push our buttons, and that's OK!
Given how much the people we love bug us, it's no wonder that the behavior of people we don't know or don't like all that much can push us over the edge.
Mentally and emotionally tired people have often carried everyone's problems on their backs, with little in return. They've gone above and beyond, and still some people don't appreciate it or push too hard.
Research has shown that having a social support system leads to better mental health. So, when these giving (but exhausted) people are deprived of it, they go from loving almost everyone to pretty much being done with society.
4. 'Honestly, I don't care'

There's only so much nonsense tired people can take. When they're pushed around at work and expected to give their all in their personal life, even the most resilient people will have the crash-out of the century. It isn't a single person or problem, though.
Life's been beating at their door for a while now. With their energy depleted, their ability to be kind has been thrown out the window. Feeling burned out with no hope in sight, don't expect tired people to care about your feelings. They'd love to, but their exhaustion is taking over their life.
They may not even mean this to be unkind. They're just emotionally tired and they'd rather be straight-up with you than play around.
5. 'I'll deal with it later'

If you relate to the idea of being emotionally tired, you probably remember a time when you were on top of things. And now you probably relate to how not on top of things you've become.
People who are mentally and emotionally exhausted usually remember a time when they got everything done on time, but as burnout set in, they became less proactive. With their burnout lowering their productivity, they've become used to saying, "I'll deal with it later."
Is procrastination a good thing? No, but sometimes you feel like you can't stop it. They feel like they're drowning with no lifeguard in sight. Being forced to take on everyone's burden, including their own, it's no wonder they procrastinate. Their body is shutting down and, as a result, is in complete survival mode.
6. 'I just need some alone time'

Once someone is burned out, it's best to leave them alone. While they absolutely need support, they aren't in the headspace to give you a list of ways to help, so try giving them some time and offer to support them when they're ready.
Burnout leads to irritability, which can impact every sector of their lives. Yes, it might be off-putting, but if you love this person, try to be understanding.
When they ask for time alone, they aren't trying to be dramatic or hurtful. Listening to them when they say, "I just need some alone time," is the singular best thing someone can do. Not only does it show you're willing to hear them, but it gives them the space they need to reset.
7. 'I don't feel like talking right now'

While extroverts thrive on social interaction, even they can get exhausted and need time to just sit quietly.
When you're that level of emotionally tired, you'd would rather eat dirt than talk. And you know what? That's OK. Call them dramatic, but they aren't in the mood. Instead of being crabby in the conversation or causing themselves more exhaustion, they'll just say, "I don't feel like talking right now".
Could they fake it until they make it? Sure, but they're tired of pretending. If you love this person, let them know you care and tell them you'll check back later. They'll probably be so grateful.
8. 'Can we not today?'

Most people stay silent when they're losing patience. Then, once they've reached their limit, they explode.
That's why (as hard as it may be!) it's actually a good thing when someone who is emotionally exhausted says, "Can we just not today?" They aren't trying to be careless with their words, they're literally trying to ask for the thing they need.
When you're dealing with an exhausted person, their patience meter goes way down. Trust them, it's better to just let it go until they're ready to handle the problem or do whatever it is they said they needed to avoid.
9. 'I've got a lot on my mind'

There's no worse feeling than being overwhelmed and not knowing where to put all your big feelings.
With hundreds of thoughts swirling in their brain, the only thing mentally tired people can muster is, "I've got a lot on my mind." They aren't trying to hurt others by being avoidant and they're likely not trying to withhold anything from you.
Truly, most exhausted people aren't going out of their way to be difficult. They simply have a lot of feelings and can't put them into words. If you combine that with a person who is also afraid of being vulnerable, you have a powder keg of feelings that can be hard to explain.
They want to be a powerhouse others can depend on, but with this level of overwhelm, they've got to deal with the internal to fix the external and that's what they're trying to do.
10. 'Can I catch a break?'

Life has a way of smacking you upside the head when you least expect it, doesn't it?
The happiest people tend to be the ones who know that there will be good and bad, and who try to focus on the good. Still, when you keep getting knocked down, that can be hard to do.
People who are mentally and emotionally exhausted are often the ones who've been continuously stepped on by others. For no reason, the universe has been challenging them left and right. This is why it's understandable that they say, "Can I catch a break?"
Still, focusing on this negativity isn't going to help them recover. If possible, they should take some time down, simplify their schedules where they can, and even reach out for help from a counselor or even just a friend who can help them sort it out.
Then, and only then, can they get back to growing what makes them feel happy and good and start letting go of all the random bad stuff that got them down in the first place.
