Being chill is a vibe that mentally and emotionally relaxed people have mastered and one that I’m envious of. They make it look easy and can even convey that calm when they are casually talking, using phrases that let everyone know they are happy to be in the moment.

As someone who is always anxious about what people think of me and stressing over every detail of my life, I see these people and wonder how they do it. Keeping calm in every situation shows they have a regulated nervous system. This type of person looks at things with a clear perception. They often influence the energy of a room. When they’re calm, it can make others feel the same. You can tell how relaxed someone is in everyday conversation by how they handle even the most stressful topics.

Phrases mentally and emotionally relaxed people often say to play it cool in every conversation:

1. ‘We’ll figure it out’

Optimistic people are more relaxed than the average person. They believe outcomes will be positive, which makes figuring things out with others easier. Failure doesn’t always feel like a bad thing for them. If they team up with someone and it doesn’t go to plan, they view it as a chance to grow. They’re not worried because they’ll figure it out one way or another.

Optimists have healthier views on life and may even live longer than the average person. When they say they’ll get through something, they mean it. They’ll approach the situation with a clear mind and work hard for a solution.

2. ‘I’m not worried about it’

We’ve all been told to stay calm at one point or another. Personally, that makes me do the exact opposite. Now, I’m more stressed and irritated with whoever told me to calm down! Not everyone is built this way, thankfully. Some people approach a situation with a positive attitude and don’t let their stress blur their vision.

Someone who doesn’t worry about the little things has better coping mechanisms. While some anxiety is expected, overwhelming worrying thoughts can consume us. A relaxed person can talk themselves off this ledge, reminding themselves they can get through anything.

3. ‘I’m happy for you’

It can be hard to celebrate the victories of others. This sounds harsh, but when you are stressed about getting through your day, seeing others succeed can feel difficult. Some people are left wondering why the good things happen to everyone but them. The truth is that they are likely overwhelmed, and comparing themselves to others is something they can’t help doing.

Someone calm knows the benefits of congratulating the people in their lives. When you feel happy for someone else, it can positively affect your mental health. They know that someone else’s success does not reflect on theirs. Rather, it’s important to support one another.

4. ‘That makes sense’

The stress of everyday life can cause us to have a short fuse. We can be more reactive with the people we love when we don’t agree with something they say. Many people are living their lives overstimulated. From working too much to always being available to others through social media and texting, it can be hard to keep your cool when everything feels overwhelming.

Someone calm is less likely to react to others that way. Relaxed people think more clearly and react appropriately. Instead of arguing, they might be able to see someone else’s perspective and have a calm and controlled conversation.

5. ‘I was wrong, I’m sorry’

It takes maturity to apologize when you do something wrong. Not everyone has what it takes to approach a confrontation with a relaxed mind. Often, we jump on the defensive and have a hard time believing we did anything wrong in the first place. This leads to more difficult, complex confrontations that could have ended more easily if they apologized.

Learning to apologize is therapeutic. You’re showing the person you care and want to grow from what happened. A relaxed person may not feel so uptight while someone explains what they did that hurt them. It can make for a calm conversation.

6. ‘It’s fine if we don’t agree’

Certain people are difficult to have conversations with. They may play devil's advocate just for the fun of it. They push buttons, which can lead to a more frustrating and difficult argument. Not everyone is comfortable admitting it’s okay to agree to disagree. They want to change opinions.

A relaxed person can look at this with an open mind. While some people get caught up trying to defend their position, this type of person knows arguing isn’t worth it. Trying to talk a passionate person out of their opinion isn’t productive. They know that agreeing to disagree can be a helpful strategy to keep the discussion from becoming heated.

7. ‘It is what it is’

I’m not the type of person who is good at dealing with the unknown. Instead, I overthink until it completely drains me. I’ve always been envious of people who can look at a situation with the mindset that everything will be fine, and if for some reason it isn’t, it will all work out in the end.

Someone comfortable using this phrase has accepted that sometimes, things are abstract. There isn’t a right or wrong way it can all be handled calmly. They can recontextualize things and work through whatever happens, leaving them calmer as they navigate complicated situations.

8. ‘Let’s talk through it’

Calm and relaxed people do exceptionally well at sitting down and working through a problem with an open mind. They have skills that make talking something out less of a challenge than for the other person. Using these skills, they can identify a problem and find a way to solve it. They look for a solution by diving into the problem with someone else.

This might happen in a work project or while trying to help someone make a difficult decision. Their relaxed demeanor can make others feel safe to speak their truth, knowing this person will do whatever it takes to talk it through and find a solution.

9. ‘Let me think about it’

Have you ever asked someone a question and had them instantly tell you no? I’ll be honest, I can be that person. I don’t always have the patience to think through things. Instead, I’ll say the first thing that comes to mind to hopefully wrap the conversation up and avoid any more awkward moments.

Overthinking decisions is common. We have all put pressure on ourselves to come up with the best solution. More relaxed people may give themselves space to think things through. They won’t rush to a conclusion just for the sake of it. They fully process every emotion and will get back to others if they still need to reflect on the situation.

10. ‘I don’t think I can do that right now’

People-pleasers have good intentions, but their need to put everyone else above themselves takes a serious toll on them. They may neglect things they need to accomplish to do something for another person. This can cause them to fall behind in their tasks and miss out on opportunities because they are too busy helping someone else. They don’t want to let anyone down.

Calm people might be able to work through their to-do list a bit better than the average person. Instead of hyper-focusing on others, they know when to put themselves first. They understand that they can’t pour from an empty cup and might tell someone they can’t do something to keep themselves from becoming overwhelmed with tasks they can’t possibly complete.
