Being judgmental is something we all do, but most of us keep our mouths shut and just let thoughts live silently. People who use that judgment to make others feel unwanted and hurt are different.

They have no problem saying the thoughts out loud. They tend to use phrases that really sting, and usually only do it to make themselves feel better somehow.

People who use these phrases in casual conversation make others feel unwanted and judged:

When someone accuses another person of being too sensitive, it’s basically their way of saying that the other person’s feelings aren’t welcome because they’re too big.

Some people really do feel things more deeply than others, and the people who care about them should take that into consideration. But it’s more common for people to be called out for their sensitivity when someone else wants to diminish their worth.

People who are more level-headed are able to recognize that just because someone reacts to something differently doesn’t mean they’re reacting wrong. Anyone who doesn’t care about others’ feelings won’t think twice about it, though.

2. ‘It’s not that serious’

It does seem like some people always make a big deal out of everything, even when it’s not necessary, but that doesn’t mean they need to be called out on it. There’s probably a good reason they’re taking things a little more seriously than what the situation calls for.

Giving someone emotional validation is one of the most powerful ways people can connect with each other. This is the opposite because it’s one person’s way of telling another that their feelings don’t matter. No wonder that would make them feel unwanted.

3. ‘Nobody asked you’

Even if someone offers a completely unsolicited opinion, there’s usually no need to make them feel bad about it. When people choose to point out that they never wanted that person’s input, it’s like they’re saying they shouldn’t have an opinion in the first place.

Ignoring someone like this will totally deplete their self-esteem. People who have a propensity for judging others simply won’t worry about that, though.

4. ‘Don’t embarrass yourself’

This is a complicated phrase because, in warning someone not to embarrass themselves, the person who said it is inevitably causing that embarrassment. They know exactly what they’re doing.

People are most likely to feel embarrassed when they feel like others are looking down on them, which is exactly what’s happening here. The other person is happy to provide them with the judgment they fear.

5. ‘No one cares’

This is a pretty hurtful thing for someone to hear, especially if they’re opening up about something that’s important to them. Nothing is more invalidating than being told that the person listening is just one of many who couldn’t care less.

Some people invalidate others’ emotions because they really don’t know how to react to them, but it’s clear that this is intentional. Anyone who says this wants the other person to know they aren’t valued.

6. ‘Stop making everything about you’

It’s totally possible for someone to become so self-centered that they really do seem to make everything about themselves. In that case, a gentle nudge in the other direction would be helpful.

That’s not what these people are doing, though. They’ll accuse someone of being too focused on themselves just because they brought up a different perspective that they don’t want to address, and they’ll destroy their self-confidence in the process.

7. ‘Everyone else gets it’

There’s nothing worse than someone who actually enjoys making other people feel dumb. One way for them to do that would be to claim that everyone understands what’s going on except for that one person who still has some questions.

In this case, that person is showing how condescending and disrespectful they are. They have a problem if they need to treat everyone around them as less than in some way.

8. ‘You should just go’

There are very few situations where it's acceptable to force someone out of a conversation, but judgmental people do it all the time. When they get frustrated with someone, they’ll tell them to leave.

Any kind of dismissive behavior like this is meant to make people feel small. The only people who make this a habit are the ones who want to make themselves feel superior, which says a lot more about them than the person they’re targeting.
