Couples Who Are Slowly Losing Their Mental & Emotional Connection Often Say 9 Phrases In Casual Conversation
sergey causelove / Shutterstock When couples start to feel emotionally disconnected, it has a huge effect on their communication. The way they talk to each other will be one of the first signs that they’re not as close as they once were.
Sometimes this means they use hurtful phrases, but it can also mean the things they say show that they just don’t care anymore.
When a couple is losing their mental and emotional connection, they’ll say these phrases often in casual conversations
1. ‘You can do whatever you want’

In an ideal world, couples would always work together and be totally committed to their relationship. But it’s pretty clear we don’t live in an ideal world, which is easy to see when couples don’t care about each other like they used to.
It’s actually totally normal for couples to grow apart over time. Both partners will keep changing as individuals, so the relationship won’t always look the same. That doesn’t have to lead to animosity, but some just shrug and ignore the ways they used to collaborate.
2. ‘Can you give me some space?’
It isn’t always a bad thing when someone asks their partner for space. But, in some cases, it’s just a way for them to avoid facing their problems. They’d rather have distance than some kind of resolution.
That means they’re letting go of the dreams they had for the future. No one likes to argue, but it’s necessary sometimes. Couples who won’t do that are starting to move on because they aren’t trying to fight for something anymore.
3. ‘I don’t want to do this right now’
Making the choice to sweep your issues under the rug can be very deceptive. It feels so much easier, and it is at first. All of those suppressed feelings will build up over time, though, which makes things worse.
This happens a lot with couples who are losing their connection. There’s no reason they would want to work through problems when they feel like they don’t care, so they’ll keep putting it off for a later date that never actually comes.
4. ‘It doesn’t matter’
When someone says that something doesn’t matter, there’s a really good chance that they mean the exact opposite. But they’re keeping the conversation as shallow as possible for a reason.
Couples who don’t feel close usually shut down emotionally as a way to shield themselves from pain. Relationships can’t survive without vulnerability, though, so this doesn’t work in the long run.
5. ‘I guess I forgot to tell you’

One of the biggest signs that a couple is growing so far apart that they might not be able to salvage their relationship is their communication becoming purely practical. The things they used to want to share with their partner feel like they don’t matter anymore.
When there’s nothing deep left, they’ll leave a lot of little things out of their conversations. They might say they just forgot about it, but it’s pretty clear that they didn’t make an effort in the first place.
6. ‘There’s no reason to argue about it’
Couples who can fight it out respectfully not only tend to have stronger relationships, but also clearly care about each other enough to go through hard things together. When one partner dismisses an argument, it’s not an act of love. It really just means they don’t want to put in the effort it would take.
Instead of sending the message that they don’t want to have a hurtful disagreement, this phrase shows they feel resigned. They think it’s pointless to even try, so they’re giving up.
7. ‘I don’t want to bother you’
The quality of a couple’s communication is super telling. When they talk about less than they used to, it’s a sign of them quitting.
They could easily frame it as a good thing because they thought talking about whatever was on their mind would make things harder. There may be times when that really does need to happen, but it’s not good when it becomes a pattern.
8. ‘I’ll take care of it’
This phrase can really mean one of two things. It could be someone’s way of telling their partner that they don’t want to burden them, so they’ll take charge themselves. But it could also be a way for them to say they don’t expect help so they won’t wait for any.
Either way, they clearly feel like they’re in a one-sided relationship where they give everything they have while their partner gives nothing. That dynamic can’t last for long since it’s born out of disconnection.
9. ‘I already know how this is going to go’

People use this phrase when they think they can predict the future, and they don’t think it looks very good. That injects some major negativity into the relationship, which quickly turns toxic.
One partner feeling negative about their relationship causes a domino effect that makes the other one feel the same way, tearing the couple apart completely. This can happen to anyone, but it’s even more common when a couple doesn’t feel close anymore.
