About Sheri Winston

YourTango Bio

Hi! I’m Sheri Winston CNM, RN, BSN, LMT—medical professional, teacher of Wholistic Sexuality, and the founder and executive director of The Center for the Intimate Arts. We offer empowering, entertaining, enlightening erotic education for everyone: men, women, singles, partners, adults, teens and people of all orientations and inclinations. I’m here to inspire folks to have a lot more fun and fulfillment in their intimate lives!

My work is deeply informed by my background, which includes decades of practice as a certified nurse-midwife, gynecology practitioner, registered nurse, holistic healer, childbirth educator and massage therapist. Over a dozen years ago, I stopped catching babies and retired from clinical practice as I moved deeper into my mission to create a world where sex is celebrated, understood, free from shame and valued as an essential and integral aspect of who we are. Thus I envisioned Wholistic Sexuality™, an integrative model of healthy, loving, responsible, respectful and ecstatic sexuality.

In alignment with my sex-positive mission, I founded Sheri Winston’s Center for the Intimate Arts. We are dedicated to shifting the cultural model of sex and relationships into one that’s premised on empowerment, pleasure, integrity, love, learning and joy.

I’m also the author of the award-winning book: Women’s Anatomy of Arousal – Secret Maps to Buried Pleasure, a revolutionary view of women’s bodies and anatomy. It won the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists 2010 Book of the Year Award, in large part due to the essential nature of its ground-breaking information about the integral nature of women’s sexuality, bodies, pleasure and health.

I travel and teach all over North America (and the World Wide Web), spreading the vision of transformative, healthy, fabulous Wholistic Sexuality. My students give me rave reviews for my lively, entertaining style, integral perspective, the high quality of my information, and the humor and comfort of my classes. We offer in-person and on-line education, digital products, a rich and education-filled website, private consultations and more.

Sheri Winston Success Stories

Powerful Tools

Single men

The sacred sexuality workshop was and still is an amazing step. The exercises mental, physical, emotional, and social were powerful tools to continue using. What's still working for me, is just an overall sense of well-being, and I feel less constricted about my sexuality. Plus, I found it exciting to see that sexuality can be used to heal the world.

Her First as well as Several Orgasms!

Women with sexual dysfunctions

As a middle-aged, plus-sized, average woman married 25 years who had never experienced a climax, to stumble upon this book has been an incredible blessing, to say the least. After reading it aloud to my husband on our road trip to the beach, we found freedom, healing, and other pleasures unknown to me before including (my first as well as) several orgasms. My husband also mentioned several times how helpful, detailed, and encouraging the book was for him. We are both so encouraged!more

I have been a doula as well as birthing my 6 kiddos naturally....I had resigned myself to being satisfied with my ability to birth naturally and help others reach that goal, but had given up on ever having orgasm. I've tried to be content with the success and sacredness of the procreating part of my sexuality, and accept that I just wasn't ever gonna really like or 'get' the sex part. One of the important things I discovered through Sheri's book was that so much of the feelings and words I use with my doula clients are mirrored in sexual response. Why this surprised me, I don't know, but her book helped me tap into those resources. I've always loved birth, but now I can say I've experienced BOTH sides of my female sexuality. Of course there's much more than this particular connection in the book, but it was one point that really helped me due to my experiences with giving and coaching birth.

I can't say what made me order this particular book except that I had been having a mind and heart shift recently, read the reviews, and I dared to grasp a shimmer of hope that someone could help me try again. Thankfully, Sheri's Women's Anatomy of Arousal was a perfect fit. Her relaxed tone, fun personality, and extremely clear illustrations and instructions were exactly what I've needed and craved from a sex manual. Although I can understand the book might seem offensive to some due to her use of 'charged' words, artwork, and uninhibited embrace of all things sexual (I'm a fairly conservative mother after all), her tone and intention stem from a pure motive; to enlighten us that human beings are created to enjoy sex as a connected and intertwined part of our existence, and this is why our bodies/minds/hearts/spirits are hardwired for incredible pleasure. Sometimes we need a direct, forthright, and boldly presented path to find our way through the jungle of shame, mixed cultural messages, and the constraints of society. If that's where you find yourself, needing a fun-loving, extremely knowledgeable, supportive and affirming guide, take Sheri's hand and enjoy the journey!

Now Healed & Having Pleasure Instead of Pain

I want to thank you. Actually, words can't really describe the depth of gratitude I have for you and your work. I just finished your book. It was life changing. You see, all of my life I have had sharp, intense, knife-like pain during almost any kind of penetration whether it be tampons, sex toys, speculums, or intercourse. And because of this pain I've also never been able to achieve orgasm during intercourse (or penetration in general) either. And I've always felt like 'damaged goods' because of this, and I had deep shame and fear about my body that didn't 'work right'. I had no clue what it meant or what it could be so the mind flies to all sorts of places...Not to mention the anger and depression that goes along with not being able to have the intimacy during sex that I desired because of this. In short-- I shut down. I felt that I would never have a 'normal' sex life, so I quit expecting partnered sex to be pleasurable or even pleasant. I quit seeking sex because I got tired of having the 'it's really not you...no really...--it's me' talk. When I shut that down, I shut down passion which was like shutting down three fourths of my soul. I've felt like a husk of a person many times over the last eleven years.

So--your book found me. And I devoured it. And for the first time in my life someone was able to tell me what this pain is. I could always feel this cushy ridge on the roof of my vagina and it HURT like sharp knives when you applied pressure to it. Over the years I've thought it was everything from cancerous growths to "extra ridges of tissue" and was looking into all manner of surgery, etc to get rid of it. But it's not. It's my urethral sponge. And evidently for me if this is not fully engorged prior to penetration I have pain (understatement). Thanks to your book I took some time to fully (and I mean FULLY lol) arouse everything prior to penetration with a sex toy and guess what? No pain! It sounds so simple and trite but you cannot imagine the wonder and joy of that experience of being able to move any way that I chose or do anything I wanted WITH NO PAIN. And the kicker? I actually came too! From penetration only! HOLY SHIT ! xD xD xD

And the most awesome part is-- I was left with this deep deep feeling of love and awe and reverence and appreciation for my Pussy and my body. All of it, not just my clit. It's been such a.... freeing.... experience.

So thank you. THANK YOU. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, Sheri. You can not imagine how important your work is. We need this information. Women and men. I know that I am not alone, and my story is not unique. And there is (almost) no place we can talk freely about these kinds of issues in our society. I am so grateful that I discovered your book now. I am only 30. How many women have gone their entire lives thinking pleasure is just denied them or that something is wrong with them just because this information is not available even among medical practitioners? It should be common knowledge.

I so deeply appreciate you, Sheri. Words truly can never express.

With all my heart,
A.M.
