I know what it feels like to be consumed at work, to work with a frustrated team in a tough environment with toxic leadership who are not people-focused, to not have time for yourself, and to be too drained during the weekend to make time for the people that matter the most to you.  For the first 9 years of federal service, I served in the United States Army, 24/7.  The remainder of my career was at the Pentagon. For years, I gave 150% of myself to work, lost sleep, and just did not feel fulfilled even though my team and I were hitting our goals. I went to bed at 8 pm every night just because I knew I would not sleep well and I had to get up at 4 am, every workday!  The euphoria of much-needed vacations quickly evaporated the first day back at work.

The turnaround came for me while attending a leadership course in 2010 when I took the Clifton StrengthsFinder Assessment based on the book, The Extraordinary Leader.  After taking the assessment I found out my top five talent themes and immediately went to work on intentionally investing in myself to turn all five talents into strengths.  I wasn’t an expert in the leadership development field at the time, but I wanted to be and I am now a Clifton-certified Strengths Coach with over 700 coaching hours.  I have provided a StrengthsFinder keynote address and workshops for the Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Agency, the Department of Commerce, Patent and Trademark Office, the White House National Security Council, the Department of Defense, the Mandela Washington Fellowship, private and nonprofit organizations.

Today, I’ve grown and changed and spent the last 10 years focused not only on my own leadership development but developing all levels of leaders, teams, and individuals as well. Who would have thought in 2010 that I would be overseeing a leadership academy or that I would have developed the concept for the leadership academy and personally taught the curriculum that would transform people’s lives? 

In 2015, I received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service, for my efforts.  The biggest compliment I receive from my program graduates is how the program not only improved their professional life but their personal lives as well.  Relationships with those who mattered most to them significantly improved and they had more balance. They realized there was no one like them in all the world and that if they focused on their unique strengths and abilities they could win at the game of life.

Now, I’m more excited than ever because I’ve retired from the federal government at an early age with lots of energy and passion and can devote more time to my husband Tom, my daughter Danielle, recently married to my son-in-law Kevin, and expecting their first child, and to enriching the lives of others by sharing what I’ve learned and love – how to be an effective leader who is actually living one’s legacy with more balance in all aspects of life.

20 Million Strong Can't Be Wrong

In a world focused on deficit management, American psychologist Donald O. Clifton posed the following question: “What if we study what’s right with people versus diagnosing their problems and trying to fix what’s wrong with them?”

Over the next 50 years, Dr. Clifton studied greatness and what gives people access to greatness. He turned his passion into a company that studied strength, surrounding himself with some of the top researchers and psychologists in the world, conducting over 2,000,000 personal interviews with the highest achievers across multiple sectors and cultures.

His study of successful individuals revealed that talents played a key role and could develop into strengths through investment. After identifying the most common patterns of talents and strengths, Clifton’s team of researchers defined 34 themes, split evenly between 17 task-oriented and 17 relationship-building Strengths resulting in the StrengthsFinder assessment now called the CliftonStrengths assessment.

I never got to meet Dr. Clifton, who passed away in 2003, but the CliftonStrengths assessment changed my life forever. I took the assessment for the first time in 2010. I was attending a leadership development program. The premise of the course is that if you focused on developing into strengths just two of your top five natural talents and abilities, you would be seen as an extraordinary leader. After taking the assessment I found out my top five talent themes and immediately went to work on developing all five talents into strengths. I wasn’t an expert in the leadership development field at the time, but I wanted to be.

I had taken many other “personality tests”, but nothing came close to describing me the way StrengthsFinder assessment did. Reading the results of the Personalized Insights Report was eerie. It described me better than I knew myself at the time.

Today, I’ve grown and changed and spent the last 10 years focused not only on investing in my leadership development but developing other leaders as well. Who would have thought in 2010 that I would be overseeing a leadership academy at the Pentagon? Oh, by the way, I developed the concept for the leadership academy and identified the curriculum that would transform people’s lives and it did with over 200 students who attended my programs.
