I Believe

Men and women have unique communication styles from the boardroom to the bedroom. My mission has been to navigate the gender mine field and “reach across the aisle” to open the lines of communication through cutting edge techniques that can be applied directly with immediate success.

About

Dr. Audrey Nelson is an internationally recognized trainer, key-note speaker, author and consultant who helps organizations increase their productivity and profitability through winning communication strategies. She specializes in gender communication, conflict management and communication skills. Audrey’s mission continues to be guiding men and women through the challenges found in the mine field called “gender communication.”

Audrey addresses these kinds of dilemmas:
• Have you ever had the feeling women ask “trick” questions?
• Have you ever noticed how men can sometimes appear glazed over or “mask” their facial expressions?
• Have you ever been accused of sending “mixed messages” and not known how to change your behavior?
• Have you ever been astonished at having been admonished to “calm down” when you present a great idea to your male colleagues?
• Have you ever felt like she just expects you to know what she wants? Are you expected to be a “mind reader”?
• Have you ever felt like she goes on and on and on…..and on?

Dr. Nelson’s professional background includes teaching in the Dept. of Communication at the University of Colorado, Boulder, San Diego State University and Southwestern College. Audrey received numerous awards for her teaching including the most competitive recognition at the University of Colorado, Boulder, the Teaching Excellence Award. For 35 years she has trained and consulted for a wide variety of government and Fortune 50 companies in 48 states, Australia, Great Britain, South Korea and Canada. Among them are Xcel Energy, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, American Board of Trial Attorneys, AT&T, Honeywell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Upjohn Pharmaceuticals, Pentax, Lockheed Martin, Johnson & Johnson, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Dept. of Justice.

She holds a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication. She conducted post-doctoral work at Warnborough College in Oxford, England in gender communication.
Audrey has her own “gender laboratory” at home. Alexandra and Armand have provided daily examples of sex differences and sex role socialization through anecdotes, many of which she includes in her research, CDs and books.

Thirty years ago she co-founded and served as president for the Organization for the Research on Women and Communication (ORWAC) which is an academic journal dedicated to publishing research on women and communication. ORWAC is a thriving leader of gender research in the United States. www.orwac.com

Audrey is a published author. Her first book, YouDon’t Say: Navigating Nonverbal Communication between the Sexes (Prentice Hall, 2004) was published in six languages. Recently, she co-authored Code Switching: How to Talk so Men will Listen (Penguin-Alpha Books, 2009). Her award winning research is cited in such books as More Power to You and Communication between the Sexes.
