What is a narcissist? Odds are, you probably don't know any. Narcissism is a rare disease that only impacts about 200,000 people across the United States per year.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental condition in which a person has an inflated sense of self. They believe that they are untouchable in this world when it comes to breaking the law, putting themselves in danger, and treating others. Most commonly found in men, it involves a person in need of admiration by others. A narcissist will also disregard other's feelings in hopes of bettering their own lives.
Basically, narcissists are entitled people who only think of themselves. They sound pretty horrible, right?
A lot of the times, narcissists aren't easily traceable, and even if the people you know don't have the personality disorder, there are still people that show narcissistic traits. You could know someone like this and have no idea. If you have someone in your life who is constantly putting down others, believes they are higher than thou, and is extremely demanding and cocky, then they might be showing some narcissistic tendancies. However, you can't diagnosis someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder — only a licensed professional within the field of psychology can.
Sadly, there is no treatment for someone who suffers from narcissism. While they are encouraged to go to therapy and find coping skills to better fit in with the world around them, there is no true cure for someone suffering from this personality disorder.
As one of many personality disorders, narcissism can be caused by a variety of reasons. Childhood trauma, genes, and other psychological factors can all play a role in whether or not someone inherits this trait.
Researchers have questioned if narcissists are even capable of love. Research has shown that while narcissists can love and be loved, they are unmotivated to reciprocate that love and understand the feelings of their loved ones. Their lack of empathy makes them immune to crying and feeling pain for others, or intense love for their family and friends.
