Who Is Gabriella Elizabeth Long? New Details On The Teenager Who Stabbed Her Grandfather To Death

She stabbed her grandfather to death over $30. But what else do we know about Gabriella Elizabeth Long? It’s been called a brutal, grisly crime — and really, there are no other words to describe it. On April 17, 2019, 71-year-old Joseph Monka was found dead in his home in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania. According to Citizen’s Voice, Monka was brutally beaten with a golf club and stabbed in the neck. News of his death sent shockwaves through the Edwardsville community — and the shock only continued when, just a few days later, his granddaughter Gabriella Elizabeth Long was arrested, along with three of her other friends, for their role in the crime.

Who is Gabriella Elizabeth Long? Let’s look at what we know about the gruesome details of the crime against her grandfather.

1. Gabriella’s mother was the first to report there was a problem

Just a few days before Joseph Monka’s body was found, Gabriella’s mother Jessica Karmon was the first to report there was a problem. According to the New York Daily News, Karmon called the police to perform a wellness check on Monka. Karmon claimed she’d not heard from Monka in a while and was concerned something had happened to him. According to the same report, she also was concerned because she hadn't been able to find either Monka’s car or her daughter and was concerned that something terrible had happened to both.

2. The police found Joseph Monka’s body under a dresser

When the police went to Joseph Monka’s house to perform the wellness check, per Jessica Karmon’s request, they found the house completely ransacked. Police immediately realized that there was a problem, and they began searching the house. Monka’s body was found under a dresser. Investigators reported that he’d been severely beaten and stabbed in the neck.

3. The motive was money

According to Penn Live, it was obvious why Gabriella Elizabeth Long and her friends — Devin Malik Cunningham, her boyfriend, who is originally from Wilkes-Barre; Christopher Brian Cortez, who is also originally from Wilkes-Barre; and Mercedes Lin Hall of Kingston — allegedly killed her grandfather: because he’d kept more than $30,000 in cash in the house. Investigators speculate that, when Gabriella realized that her grandfather had that much money laying around, she plotted his murder with her boyfriend and friends.

When word got out about Joseph Monka’s murder, his neighbors were horrified, to say the least. “Over money, your own family, it’s just a disgrace,” neighbor Ronald Briggs said to the outlet. “This is a quiet area. Everyone around this area knows each other.”
