Though he was elected for his first Senate term in 2017, John Kennedy (of no relation to the Massachusetts-born Kennedy family) has had a long career in politics. He served as the Treasurer of Louisiana for 17 years, and before that, was on the staff for Governor Buddy Roemer. He lost in the election for Attorney General of Louisiana, and returned to practice law in a private firm.

What’s most notable about Kenedy is that he was once a Democrat but switched parties in 2007 while serving as treasurer.
