what is a trap queen

I’ll admit it: in most aspects of my life I am “behind the times.” I don’t listen to podcasts or have Snapchat. I still buy books in print. I love their paper form. And I haven’t updated my playlist in 10-plus years. (Yeah. I get it. I’m old.)

So when I recently heard the term "trap queen" I was confused. At best. I mean, what is a trap queen? Is it an insult or a compliant? Well, worry not dear friends, because I’ve found out everything one needs to know about the term. Everything and more.

According to Urban Dictionary, “trap queen” has numerous meanings.

It is “a bomb-ass female [and/or] the baddest female.” It is a woman who “is loyal to her friends, lives for her family, and gives no f*** to bitter, petty b******.” It is a “a girl who... risk[s] her life guarding a trap house for her drug dealing boyfriend,” and/or “a woman who [lives with and] accepts that her man spends most of his life [incarcerated/]in custody,” and it is “a witty or street-smart female, usually with an urban flavor or appeal, who is loyal and resourceful... capable of sass, class, and trash.”

The phrase “trap queen” is relatively new. In fact, the first known usage of the word is by Fetty Wap — an American rapper — in 2014, when Fetty released a single entitled just that.

According to the New Jersey rapper, the phrase and song title “came from the trap,” Fetty told DJ Smallz. “I was dealing with a female at the time. She was helping me bring that money in. It all basically surrounded itself. That was my queen at the time.”

Not sure what I mean? Check out these lyrics:

And I get high with my baby

I just left the mall, I'm gettin' fly with my baby, yeaaahhh

And I can ride with my baby

I be in the kitchen cookin' pies with my baby, yeeaahhh

And I can ride with my baby

I just left the mall, I'm gettin' fly with my baby, yeaaahhh

And I can ride with my baby

I be in the kitchen cookin' pies with my baby, yeeaahhh

In short, according to Fetty, a trap queen is one hell of an amazing gal. That said, as noted above, the meaning of the phrase has varied over the years.

With so many meanings to (and of) trap queen, the phrase can be used in a wide variety of ways. Below are just a few examples:

  1. Man, Sara is such a trap queen.
  2. I love that Trisha is so fierce and loyal. She is a true trap queen.
  3. Did you hear what happened at Drue’s house? The found his stash and arrested his trap queen.
  4. I may be in prison for the next 15 years but it’s all good. My trap queen is waiting for me to get out.
  5. My boo supports me, and everything I do. Best trap queen ever.

Of course, you may (or may not) find a way to incorporate trap queen into your daily language, but if you want to, now you know how.
