I'd Rather Be Single Than Settle For Less Than I'm Worth

You don't own me.

If a girl's been single for a decently long period of time, everyone loves to tell her she's being "too picky." As if getting into a relationship is the same as deciding on what restaurant to go to or what outfit to wear.

Being in a relationship just for the sake of being in a relationship has become so much the norm that people can't understand why some women haven't settled down already.

Like what are you waiting for? Someone you actually like and enjoy being around? Someone who will complement your life instead of complicating it? Don't you see how unrealistic that is????

Yes, in some aspects settling down makes sense. Two incomes, another person to support you, a person to bring to all your family functions, etc. On the surface, it's a great addition to the picture your painting of your life. But if you're only in it for the appearances, will it really make you happy?

Here's a hint: it won't.

Truth is, you'd be much happier on your own than with a person who isn't right for you.

When you're in a relationship, you're fully invested in someone's life and share some of their responsibilities. You're expected to be there for big events, support their opinions, get along with their friends and pick them up from the airport. You're a shoulder to cry on, on-call 24/7.

It's a role that's going to take up a lot of your time — so why would you want to take on that level of responsibility if it's not for someone who's so uniquely extraordinary that you can't believe they actually exist?

Because, loneliness. Duh, Emily.

We all want someone to care about us, and the good part about being in a relationship is that you have someone willing to take on that level of responsibility for you too. But here's the other thing: you won't do a good job at it if it's not someone you really, really, REALLY, want to be with.

I'm talking the walking-through-fire-and-jumping-off-cliffs kind of dedication.

You'll make that person's life a million times better because you want to, not because you feel like it's your responsibility as their partner. And guess what? They'll do the same for you.

So be picky. Be very, very picky. Stay single until you meet that one person who will make you understand what it means to have stars in your eyes.

Because settling down really isn't good for anyone.
