About Mona Cooley
Devastated by Mental Illness in my Family to Coaching Other Families to a Life of Peace
At the tender age of 22, although I was quickly advancing to management level in my career, I was excited and hopeful when my husband and I decided to start our family. I was confident that I had what it took to manage the extra responsibilities, handle life changing situations and that I possessed the energy to face the challenges as they arose.
We were a happy family of two until the twins arrived, halting further advancement in my career.
I found it challenging to go from being a career person to a mom raising a family. Before long, though, I became a mom who was fully engaged in the lives of our children, and I valued our family gatherings that, over the years, became family rituals.
Adjusting to this new role would be the catalyst for revealing my purpose in life: to share our success story with other families who think family cohesiveness is not possible, and are fearful that relationships will crumble under the pressures of mental illness. Not only can you have peace and happiness, but acknowledging mental illness will show you what is not working effectively in your family.
If you’re like I was -- successful and confident in specific skills such as following through with setting boundaries, facing adversities, and initiating change, but perhaps less skilled in communicating your feelings and thoughts without causing conflicts and friction--if you’re feeling like a family life that includes some predictability and order is not obtainable—and if you’ve been searching for help but never finding it, now is the time to deal with the existing problems before they go beyond repair.
