There are some things that people are totally justified in complaining about, and they’ll probably feel better after they do. Others go too far and find something wrong with absolutely everything, which isn't healthy for themselves or anyone around them.

Instead of recognizing the good things in their lives and appreciating them, they always focus on the negative. They don’t feel any gratitude, so they complain about things that just don’t matter, or maybe don’t even exist.

People who constantly complain about these things in casual conversation usually have zero gratitude

1. Their friends and family being annoying

Everyone has times when they feel frustrated with the people closest to them, but it’s not something most people talk about all the time. They’re able to roll their eyes and move on instead of dwelling on it.

People who don’t feel any gratitude are different. They ignore what their family and friends mean to them and how those relationships affect their well-being and just focus on the negative side of things. They’d probably be lost without those connections, but they’d never admit to it.

2. Their stuff not being as nice as everybody else’s

Comparison is natural, and it isn’t even always a bad thing. Some people turn their bitterness over not having all the nicest things they see other people with into their entire personality, though.

That’s a sign that someone doesn’t feel much gratitude. Even if their car or phone isn’t as new as their friend’s, that doesn’t change the fact that they do have more than a lot of other people do. They could find comfort in feeling grateful for what they do have instead of feeling jealous of everyone else.

3. Being bored and not having anything to do

Boredom is a really interesting feeling. Psychology professor Erin Westgate, PhD, compared it to pain because it’s uncomfortable, but it also serves as a warning that something needs to change.

No one would probably claim to feel grateful for that, but individual perspectives make for different experiences. People who are so busy that they’re chronically stressed would probably love to feel like they had nothing to do, even for just a few minutes.

Feeling bored doesn’t automatically make someone ungrateful, but if they obsess over it, it’s easy to see that they’re overlooking the benefits of being in a slower season of life. There will probably be a point later on when they wish they felt that way again.

4. Not getting enough recognition

It’s totally normal to want to feel appreciated, but it doesn’t always feel like we are. There’s always going to be people who take advantage of others’ kindness without even stopping to say thank you.

When someone struggles with gratitude themselves, they’ll let that get under their skin until they never want to help anyone out again. Other people can separate their feelings about not getting recognition from their desire to be there for anyone who needs them.

5. Having to go to work every day

There aren’t many people who can honestly say that they love getting up and going to work every day. Jobs are often so stressful that they can lead to burnout over time, which is enough to make anyone complain.

People who turn those complaints into a habit might be missing the bigger picture, though. Even if they don’t enjoy their job, many unemployed people would do anything to be in their shoes. They still have a level of security that some people can only dream of.

6. Not being able to afford the things they want

This is one of those situations where people’s perspective makes all the difference. Feeling disappointed that you can’t buy something that would make your life better happens to everyone from time to time. It doesn’t become a problem unless someone makes it one.

There are people who are always worried about how they’re going to pay their bills and buy groceries. These money issues have a huge effect on their mental health as well. That seems much more complaint-worthy than someone not being able to renovate their kitchen. It’s way too easy to forget about how good you have it when you’re always going after something better.

7. Being burdened by too many people who rely on them

It’s hard to feel like everyone always needs your help, especially when there’s no time left for self-care. That shouldn’t be celebrated when it really is toxic.

People who get into the mindset of thinking everyone just needs to step back and give them a break might be missing something, though. Even if it’s stressful, it means people care about them. And, if they’re being completely honest, they would probably admit to caring about them too.

Loneliness is becoming a huge problem, and it can really hurt people’s health. That doesn’t mean people have to feel grateful for having too much on their plate, but it would be good for them to remember what the alternative is.

8. Their clothes being out of style

People aren’t ungrateful just because they get hit with the dread of thinking they have nothing to wear. But if someone just won’t let it go when they have the means to update their wardrobe, it means that they might want to rethink their attitude.

Clothing prices are expected to continue increasing, which puts a lot of people at a huge disadvantage. Even if their clothes are out of style or don’t fit as well as they once did, they won’t have a choice other than to keep wearing them. Not being in that situation is a blessing, even if it’s hard to see it that way.

9. Not having any good food to eat

We’ve all fallen into the trap of opening the fridge up, staring at the food inside, and then insisting there’s nothing to eat. It’s something we joke about, but it’s the reality millions of people face every day.

People who constantly complain about not having anything to eat when what they really mean is that they don’t have anything that looks good at that time are turning a very real problem into something trivial. Hunger isn’t something people should pretend to understand when they don’t.
