Sometimes, when people are insecure around you, they have odd ways of hiding it.

Rather than being upfront about feeling threatened, they'll resort to passive-aggressive phrases to subtly express how they feel. It's not that they're jealous or scared, just that their self-doubt is preventing them from revealing their true feelings.

When people feel insecure around you, they use these low-key phrases

1. 'You always seem to have everything figured out'

While this phrase sounds nice, it's not really. It's just an insecure person's way of separating you from somebody else, especially if they feel like they're falling behind or can't compete with your success.

They put you on a pedestal, even if you don't notice it, and think about all the ways they don't measure up to you. It can make you feel bad that they don't hold themselves in high regard, but it speaks to how insecure they are.

2. 'You're confident, aren't you?'

According to early psychologist Alfred Adler, people with a superiority complex are just reacting to their feelings of superiority. When they see someone who is confident and self-assured, they're condescending and put themselves above them.

Sometimes, this is obvious upon first meeting somebody, where there are constant put-downs. They say things like "wow, you're confident" to make you feel less sure of yourself.

Whether it's intentional or not, these people are covering up their own insecure sense of self because they feel threatened by how cool and collected you seem. It's just a way for them to feel better about themselves.

3. 'It must be nice to have it that easy'

This is a classic disguised comparison. Rather than acknowledging your efforts or circumstances, they write you off as having everything easy.

But insecure people with low self-esteem tend to have very high standards, sometimes to the point where they come across as snobby. When they feel insecure around others or meet somebody who has a seemingly better life than them, they immediately feel inferior.

As a result, they tend to lash out in low-key ways, using phrases like this to push their negative thinking aside.

4. 'You seem to brag a lot'

While bragging is okay in certain situations, like celebrating your small wins, some people see it as annoying. And when a person with low self-esteem feels threat-level insecure around you, they want to call it out, though passive-aggressively.

People sometimes believe that bragging makes them seem more modest, but it's actually just annoying. So, confronted with this, an insecure person may turn the tables and point out just how much another person is talking about themselves.

This phrase is a bit revealing because it shows this person's internal thoughts about you. Even if you're the kindest, most inviting and non-judgmental person, if they feel threatened by you as a result of their low self-worth, they want to feel good enough.

Whatever it is you have that they don't, they want it. If they say something subtle like this, they're likely hiding feelings of self-doubt, but don't know how to come to terms with it, so they take it out on you instead.

6. 'I have it all'

Yes, you should feel proud of your accomplishments and your life. After all, you've worked hard to get yourself here. Unfortunately, someone plagued with insecurity may use this phrase to protect themselves.

It's clearly a defense mechanism when they say "I have it all," because they might not. They're just trying to prove to others how good they have it. They resort to that same bragging they call out because they want to convince themselves of their worth.

In the end, comparing themselves to others does them no good. In fact, it can negatively affect their mental and physical health.

7. 'That's a choice'

Insecure people are constantly trying to bring others down to their level. If they can't create enough self-worth for themselves, nobody should be allowed to.

They'll use this phrase in a sarcastic way, whether they're talking about someone's outfit or life decisions. Rather than offering a compliment, they don't want that person to feel happy about the choices they've made.

It's an easy way to get into the other person's head and make them question their decision-making skills. And it's all so they don't have to deal with their own insecurities.
