When a person feels tolerated by others but never fully chosen, it can affect them deep down.

Others may not realize how they're treating this person, but over time, they can develop unhealthy habits. They essentially feel rejected, and it's painful and isolating.

When people only ever feel tolerated and not fully chosen, they develop these habits

1. They're suspicious of acceptance

Maybe in childhood, a person was ignored by their parents and, as adults, when they visit, they feel like their presence is merely tolerated. They don't feel fully accepted because quality time is nonexistent.

So, because of this experience that has affected the relationships they form with others, when they do find people who want to be around them, they're very wary. They're excessively cautious, and that can ruin a relationship before it even starts.

2. They're observant of other people's moods

People who never have been fully chosen by anyone might be in a marginalized category, or grew up neglected and unloved. Because of this experience, they're observant and are always checking on people's moods.

Growing up, they may have had to walk on eggshells at home, so they're used to preparing for an outburst. In an attempt to prevent it, they're hypervigilant. Even if there is no real threat, they're trying to protect themselves from any harm.

3. They give too much

Imagine you're a child feeling unaccepted by the people who are supposed to love you. To make up for that lack of acceptance, as an adult you try to find self-worth.

You desire a connection where someone will fully choose you. But it leaves you susceptible to people taking advantage. When you give your time and energy away, people expect it. And if you don't set boundaries, people will walk all over you.

4. They hide their true feelings

Hiding your emotions or masking certain behaviors is emotional concealment. This excessive suppression may be a result of someone feeling tolerated by people but not truly accepted.

These people may also not know exactly how to express their emotions. If they don't reveal how they truly feel, they won't have to face any disappointment.

5. They're afraid to ask for help

There are many reasons someone can be reluctant or even afraid to ask for help. Perhaps they're too confident and see asking for help as weakness. Maybe they were raised to believe asking for certain things was taboo.

Whatever the case may be, people who feel tolerated by others have a fear of asking for help. If they rarely or never feel truly chosen by anyone, why would someone choose to lend them a helping hand?

6. They're never truly at ease

When parents or peers tolerate your existence but don't give you the time of day, it forever changes a person. Maybe their parents created an unstable, unpredictable environment for them growing up, or their peers at school constantly left them out of playtime.

Without the safety of a consistent, loving friend or parent in your life, you never learned what it means to feel relaxed. As adults, these people still feel uneasy, even in truly loving relationships, because they have a hard time trusting themselves and others.
