Sometimes, when a friendship or close relationship is coming to an end, it's something people outside of the situation recognize immediately.

When a person is mentally and emotionally done with someone else, they use certain language to express how they feel. There's likely been a big shift in the relationship, and they may be tired of feeling disrespected.

People who are mentally and emotionally done with someone say these things

1. 'I don't want to talk about it'

Recognizing a person's body language and tone are crucial in determining how they're feeling. Sometimes, a person may brush off another's emotions without realizing, but when it becomes a pattern, it's a direct reflection of that relationship.

When someone is annoyed with you, they often show it through micro-expressions. They may roll their eyes or avoid eye contact altogether. Or, they may even scroll on their phone when talking to you. It makes it easier for them to shut you down when you ask them a question they're trying to avoid answering.

It's not that they don't want to talk, they probably are just too fed-up to continue the conversation. When they're feeling stressed, they'll lash out a lot quicker because their fuse is short with you.

2. 'Anyway, I should go'

If someone says this to you, they're likely trying desperately to end the conversation. It's a polite way of wrapping things up without directly saying they're done talking. When things are feeling awkward, it's an out for them.

Because they feel done talking to a certain person and don't have the energy to continue, they won't always be direct about it. They'll keep the conversation short and sweet, keeping things very surface-level.

But when they try to politely excuse themselves and it doesn't work, they may get a bit more firm with you. You'll also likely notice that they never stick around for long when they don't want to be near you.

3. 'Do what you want'

Indifference in a friendship or a relationship likely means it's ending. When you can tell your friend is starting to lose interest in your life and decisions, they're trying to distance themselves.

When you ask for advice, they don't bother trying to come up with solutions. Instead, they say "do what you want," and end the conversation there. They don't really care what you're going through, and they don't want the responsibility either.

While they may be worn out from work or their busy lives, it seems that they only adopt this attitude with you. They put their energy into other things, but can't hold a conversation without trying to end it.

4. 'I'm just saying...'

People who are mentally and emotionally done with someone stop caring if they're being offensive. They used to apologize for hurting your feelings or coming across standoffish. But now, they won't say sorry, and if they do, it's forced.

They make excuses for the toxic things they say. When you express your emotions, they get defensive and shift the blame. It's their way of avoiding accountability.

They may know that what they're saying isn't kind, but they feel better about themselves when they end with "I'm just saying." It absolves them of any guilt they may feel towards wanting to end the friendship.

5. 'I'm fine'

When people ask how we're doing or offer us something, we use "I'm fine" to relay our nonchalance or indifference. But this phrase can also be quite passive-aggressive, especially when it comes from someone who is fed up with a person.

When somebody repeatedly says this to you, they're shutting down and becoming non-communicative. They don't want to talk about their feelings, especially not with you, or are feeling overwhelmed by your presence.

If someone is constantly denying you access to their emotions and thoughts, they don't trust you. And they likely need space, permanently.

6. 'I'm just thinking'

When you begin to feel like you're talking to a brick wall, the friendship is slowly running its course. When you can sense that a person is spacing out or ignoring you, giving the excuse that they're "just thinking," they're uninterested in being around you.

Someone who truly cares about you will listen to what you have to say, as listening is a critical part of maintaining any relationship. When you're listening, you're making a conscious effort to take in what someone is saying and expressing empathy in return.

If a person is always in their own world or thinking of what they're going to say next, they don't care as much about you as you think. They're likely mentally and emotionally checked out and done.

7. 'Whatever'

"Whatever" is likely used in the midst of a disagreement, but it's incredibly disrespectful. Someone saying this is done having the conversation and doesn't want to hear anymore about it. They don't have the energy to fight anymore, and they don't have the energy for you.

Oftentimes, we get into arguments with people we love because we're concerned about the relationship and don't have the right words to express it. Unfortunately, someone is done with you when they've given up on fighting altogether.
