This week on the season finale of "The Bachelor," fans watched intently as Colton Underwood fought to win back Cassie Randolph following a dramatic series of events, including Colton jumping a 12-foot fence to leave the show.

Randolph shocked "Bachelor" Nation when she was unable to commit to a proposal and removed herself from the show before their fantasy suite date. “Colton was so good at articulating how he was feeling about me and I was trying to get there,” she explained to PEOPLE. “But it got to a point when there was three of us left, and an engagement in two weeks, and I still hadn’t told him I loved him. I didn’t want to take away the possibility [of a proposal] for him.”

“The next day, I was a mess. I was just heartbroken. I thought I had made the right decision. But I was really sad.”

Underwood knew he was in love with Randolph, and ended up breaking things off with runners-up Tayshia Adams and Hannah Godwin - which isn't typical format for "The Bachelor." Usually, the show ends with a proposal and hopefully, an engagement. But Underwood ended up doing things his way. “I know there’s a certain format that comes along with being 'The Bachelor,'” Underwood, 27, said after Randolph left. “But this was about the rest of my life. And I couldn’t risk giving Cassie up.”

Underwood then went back to tell Randolph that he broke up with the other two women, hoping to win her heart. Randolph, 23, was touched by his commitment. “I was so happy to see him,” she told PEOPLE. “And when he told me what happened, I was a little shocked. But it felt really nice that he was fighting for [us] and that he understood where I was coming from and was okay with it.”

“I thought I made the right decision in leaving,” Randolph told PEOPLE in the latest cover story. “But Colton fought for me. And he has shown me what a healthy relationship looks like.”

1. Colton and Cassie are taking their relationship slow.

Yes, Colton and Cassie are now happily dating, they announced on Tuesday’s live finale. The couple are taking things at their own pace.

“Colton never put pressure on me,” said Randolph. “I think that’s why we’re still here today, because we took it at our own pace. We didn’t want to rush something that was going to be forever.” For his part, Underwood doesn’t harbor any hard feelings about Randolph initially walking away.

“Resentment would be the last thing I feel for Cassie,” he said. “I have so much love and respect for her, and I have no doubts about how she feels about me now. Our story might not be like anyone else’s on 'The Bachelor.' But I wouldn’t change anything about it.”

2. Colton shared his love for Cassie.

Now that the show’s finale has finally aired, Colton can openly express his feelings for Randolph publicly.

“We’re so excited to be out in public and not have to hide anymore,” Underwood said. “I’m so in love, and I’m ready for everyone to know it.”

“Whatever I write will never fully articulate the feelings I have for you,” Underwood captioned a photo on Instagram of himself and Cassie in bed. “You are the most incredible person whom I have ever met, you have the kindest soul and the sweetest heart. You changed my life for the better and made this year the best year of my life.”

“I can’t wait for our adventures ahead,” he continued. “I have my best friend. I have my girlfriend. I have my future fiancé. I have my future wife. But most importantly I have you. Let’s do this thing they call life… together… forever. I love you @cassierandolph.”

On Tuesday night, Underwood posted again on Instagram, with one of the butterflies, writing “She doesn’t know this but I still have the butterfly from the first night.”

3. Cassie says Colton has her heart.

Randolph shared her own loving posts on Instagram, sharing an image of she and Colton kissing. “The secret is finally out!!! Colton, you truly have my heart,” she wrote. “Walking into this experience, I honestly wasn’t sure that true love could come from it. It hasn’t necessarily been the easiest road to get to where we are, but if that’s what it took to get here, then every single twist and turn has been undeniably WORTH IT.”

“The last 4 months, just focusing on ‘us’ have been amazing and you have become my best friend,” she continued. “You have shown me the purest, strongest love that any girl could ask for. You jumped a fence, took a risk, and challenged the ‘rules’ to fight for us. I can’t even begin to describe how lucky I feel to have you by my side. I am so excited to see what is next for us in this new phase of our ‘journey’. I’d jump a thousand fences for you and ‘like, I know, I KNOW’ that I love you more than words, point blank.”

Randolph added a P.S. — “you still give me butterflies” — a reference to the box of butterflies she brought Underwood on the first night of "The Bachelor."

“We can finally be outwardly happy, and not have to keep this big secret."

While they now live in the same area, they don't have plans to move into together yet.

“Our goal is to buy a house in Huntington Beach in the next year, but we probably won’t move in together until we’re engaged or married,” said Underwood. “As much as I want her to live with me, it’s a big step and something we both take very seriously.”
