Natural connection, sometimes referred to as intimacy, is a very real state of being based on our deep biological need for love and affection. Despite what some people may believe, the definition of intimacy goes way beyond bedroom activities.
It's really about closeness. It's about being together and creating and maintaining the bonds that are integral to any relationship. When your relationship lacks connection, it becomes vulnerable to toxicity. Intimacy as a whole can be far more complex than many people realize, as there are several types, each of which plays a crucial role in the success of our relationships.
Truly happy couples naturally connect with each other in these specific ways:
1. They share emotional intimacy

This is the ultimate and most relevant type of intimacy needed in a romantic relationship. Emotional intimacy is all about connecting your mind and feelings together with your partner. It is all about sharing your experiences with your partner.
You might be shocked to know that most couples do not experience this phase of intimacy in their relationships. It requires both understanding and vulnerability, and that takes a huge amount of trust.
Emotional intimacy requires that you acknowledge your partner for who he or she is without any reservations, and that you consider your partner before anything else. To put it simply, if there is danger or something major happens, and the first person you think of is your partner, you have emotional intimacy.
2. They share physical intimacy
This is the most common form of intimacy. In relationships, you reach the physical phase once you understand your partner's feelings and attitude.
This level of intimacy includes, but is not limited to, sleeping with your partner and other forms of physical contact, such as holding hands, cuddling, and hugging. It's easy to be attracted to someone and want to share touch when you're just getting to know each other, but true physical attraction that lasts after the novelty of new love wears off can be rare. It takes more than just appreciating another person's body.
3. They share intellectual intimacy

This vital form of intimacy is crucial to most relationships, including those with friends and family. It focuses on sharing your thoughts and opinions about what you care about most. This involves sharing thoughts and insights with your loved one through discussions that may be either lighthearted or incredibly serious.
The cord binding you together is reinforced as you engage in the mental exercise of thinking with each other. This can also involve brainstorming with your partner to address pertinent questions and problems, or playful exchanges of information, such as your favorite songs, movies, and poems.
4. They share spiritual intimacy
In my opinion, this is the most important type of intimacy. Spiritual intimacy can be seen as the hub from which all other forms of intimacy are projected. It comes from being together and understanding each other on a spiritual level.
Not religious? Don’t worry, you can still connect spiritually without prayer. Take time to meditate together, give thanks for the life you share, and promise to work through challenges together as you go. For some couples, sharing a sunset together could be spiritual intimacy. It's about connecting, together, with something bigger than just the minutiae of everyday life.
5. They share recreational intimacy

Many couples strive to reach the point where they find great comfort and joy in engaging in recreational activities together. It might be a form of indoor or outdoor sports, going to the movies, heading to the park to relax, going on a hike, or anything similar.
When you invest time participating in recreational activities and sharing common interests, you appreciate all of your time together more than ever before.
And now that you know some of the intimacy types, get ready to know your partner on a whole new level!
