For fans of Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, Easter Parade, the 1948 musical extravaganza, is a must-see. First off, there is the score by Irving Berlin, where audiences are treated to timeless tunes like "Steppin' Out with My Baby" and "Easter Parade." Then there are the fanciful costumes designed by Irene Gibbons, which only enhance the buoyancy and pure joy that make this film a classic.
The floral bonnets and playful ensembles are almost characters in themselves; they set the tone for this feel-good film. From Garland’s robin egg blue gown to Anne Miller’s canary yellow opera gloves, we fall in love with every gesture made, every song sung because the visuals are so captivating. Gibbons definitely understood what she was doing, because what would an Easter parade be without our favorite pastel hues and colorful prints?
Aside from the sacrament of Eucharist, Easter is a celebration of springtime frivolity, where egg hunts and garden parties run aplenty.
