When Robin Thicke and Paula Patton broke up, the world was baffled — they seemed like one of the few couples we all thought would make it. Seriously, they'd been together since high school and seemed accepting of those blurred lines. So what gives?
The couple announced their separation on Monday (Feb. 24), saying, "We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time." But from the sound of it, it's Patton who wanted out ... because of Thicke's wandering eyes (and hands). And maybe because of a certain twerking pop tart.
"The Miley Cyrus fiasco was a big test of their relationship. He asked her to help him out as a friend and a wife, and defend him and the performance," the insider told Us Weekly. "He begged her to speak out for him and be there for him. She agreed to be the good wife after he begged and pleaded. Then he asked her to stick with him through awards season, and she agreed. She attended the Grammys with him as a favor."
Indeed, Patton defended her hubby to the very end, telling press of the disastrous performance, "They rehearsed for three days. Robin told me in advance. I thought it was great ... I'm not that uptight. I'm not a traditionalist. We're both artists and I want him to express himself however he feels, and he let's me do the same."
Still, that artistic freedom of expression may not include kissing or feeling up on other women, which Thicke was caught doing before the breakup was announced. Sources close to the couple say the breakup was imminent. "It was a long time coming," an insider dished. "It is not a shock to Robin or Paula, and it is something they have discussed for a long time."
However, other sources say it was Patton who pulled the plug on Thicke, calling him to say she wanted a divorce. On Friday, Thicke reportedly hopped on a flight to Canada, where Patton is filming a movie, to beg her to take him back. Thicke is said to be desperate to save his marriage, especially for the sake of their son Julian, who he doesn't want raised in two separate homes.
Patton and Thicke had a long face-to-face, heart-to-heart talk, acknowledging that they've been arguing and not getting along for a while. Patton apparently stood her ground and still wants a divorce, to which Thicke reluctantly agreed — because really, what other choice does he have?
To be fair to Patton, would you want to forever be associated with this image? We don't blame her for getting the hell out.
