22 LEGENDARY Quotes From Feminist, Writer, Advocate Carrie Fisher

Buzz

RIP to a true legend.

When news broke last week that actress Carrie Fisher had had a heart attack while on an L.A.-bound flight, you could almost hear the collective, "Oh, no. Not another one." After a year of losing some of the most iconic artists the world has been lucky enough to witness, the thought of losing Fisher  or as Star Wars fans the world over will always remember her, Princess Leia — was inconceivable.

But in the days that followed, her condition went from critical to stable, and that collective, "Oh, no. Not another one" turned into a collective sigh of relief. But it wasn't to last.

Today, Carrie Fisher died at the age of 60.

As the Weather Channel's Ryan Sloane tweeted last week, "Carrie Fisher survived alcoholism, addiction, depression, bipolar disorder & 60 years on Hollywood. If anyone can survive 2016, it's her." But, sadly, not even Fisher could beat 2016, which, let's be honest, is a year from a hell.

Although Carrie Fisher will always be associated with her roll as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, she was much more than that character.

Not only was she in multiple other movies, including Hannah and Her Sisters, When Harry Met Sally…, and so many more, but she was also a writer of both semi-autobiographical novels, as well as nonfiction books in which she covered her addiction to cocaine and prescription medication, as well as her struggles with bipolar disorder, and what it was like growing up in Hollywood with two very famous parents: Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher.

Fisher made no apologies, always stood her ground, and, in a world where people far too often like to keep things politically correct and don't want to rock the boat, Fisher always told it like it was. She was a woman who had no f*cks to give, and she was loved, admired, and respected for it.

Here are 22 Carrie Fisher quotes that truly sum up just how awesome, bad ass, and honest AF she really was.

1. "I always wrote. I wrote from when I was 12. That was therapeutic for me in those days. I wrote things to get them out of feeling them, and onto paper. So writing in a way saved me, kept me company. I did the traditional thing with falling in love with words, reading books and underlining lines I liked and words I didn't know."

2. "Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."

3. "I am mentally ill. I can say that. I am not ashamed of that. I survived that, I'm still surviving it, but bring it on. Better me than you."

4. "Anything you can do in excess for the wrong reasons is exciting to me."

5. "I'm very sane about how crazy I am."

6. "I have a mess in my head sometimes, and there's something very satisfying about putting it into words. Certainly, it's not something that you're in charge of, necessarily, but writing about it, putting it into your words can be a very powerful experience."

7. "I don't want my life to imitate art, I want my life to be art."

8. "Sometimes you can only find Heaven by slowly backing away from Hell."

9. "I haven't ever changed who I am. I've just gotten more accepting of it. Being happy isn't getting what you want, it's wanting what you have."

10. "I Googled myself without lubricant. I don't recommend it."

11. "It's hard to date once you're a big Star Wars star because you don't want to give people the ability to say, 'I had sex with Princess Leia.'"

12. "I enjoy taking jobs that make fun of me —  or me as Princess Leia, or me as the writer, or whatever, as some idea."

13. "Bipolar disorder can be a great teacher. It's a challenge, but it can set you up to be able to do almost anything else in your life."

14. "There are two things that I know for certain guys are good for: pushing swings and killing insects."

15. "There is no point at which you can say, ‘Well, I'm successful now. I might as well take a nap.'"

16. "My life is like a lone, forgotten Q-Tip in the second-to-last drawer."

17. "Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What's important is the action. You don't have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow."

18. "What I always wanna tell young people now: Pay attention. This isn't gonna happen again. Rather than try to understand it as it's going along, have it go along for a while and then understand it."

19. "There's no room for demons when you're self-possessed."

20. "Please stop debating about whether or not I aged well. Youth and beauty are not accomplishments, they're the temporary happy by-products of time and/or DNA."

21. "Along with aging comes life experience, so in every way that is consistent with even being human, Leia has changed."

22. "I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra."
