It's important to be BETTER than you were yesterday.
Friday, August 5th, marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr. marching through Marquette Park in Chicago to protest housing segregation. Though times have changed drastically, they’re also still, sadly, the same.
With everything going on in the news lately, it’s hard to see whether there’s been any real progress. The racial divide in our country is still strong, but I think Martin Luther King, Jr. would be proud of the changes our country has made since his time leading the fight for equal rights.
That’s not to say we don’t have work to do. It seems like every other day, the news is reporting another incident (whether police are involved or not) of a racist event, be it a homicide, or a hate crime.
Those in the know will say that statistically, crime has dropped; however, with the advent of social media, and tweets being shot off the minute something happens, we are all too aware of every thing going on, even if it’s a minor charge.
What can we do to help?
Well, we can practice more compassion, in general. But I know that not everyone is born with the innate sense of love and empathy. No matter how hard we try, as a nation, and just as human beings, there will always be crime, hate, and dysfunction.
We don’t live in a perfect world, and humans, by nature, are not perfect.
That’s OK, but if each one us just tries a little harder to love a little more, be kinder, and pay it forward, our children, and their children may have a chance at a somewhat decent society.
So many before us have fought for the freedoms we take for granted today, and we need to keep the fight going. There’s still so much change needed, and I still hold faith in our world that we can make it better, not just for us, but for every living being on this planet.
