I'm Not Searching For My Other Half Because I Am Not Half

This ass-backwards thinking needs to stop.

I’ve never really been a fan of soulmates.

The idea that there is just one person for everyone out of a hundred billion trillion people in the universe (aliens included), and I’m somehow solely responsible for finding them sounds kind of awful.

First of all, that’s a lot of work. The world is a big place, and I’m just one person who’s really bad at directions. Now if there was a fairly cheap service that would find your soulmate for you while you laid in bed and ate Cheetos, then I’d be game.

Second of all, nothing is guaranteed. I mean, what if I did somehow manage to find my soulmate and ended up hating him? Like he could have a toe ring or watch “Entourage.” Thanks, but I’ll pass.

My laziness aside, I think when we buy into the idea of soulmates, we sell ourselves short. The whole point is that your life doesn’t really start until you meet this special person. You’re not complete until someone else completes you.

Nah.

At the risk of sounding cocky (which happens a lot), I am complete. I am whole. I am enough.

My life as a single woman isn’t just a prolonged state of waiting to be swept off my feet. In fact, I don’t really like being picked up at all. Please put me down.

By waiting for soulmates and believing in “the one,” we end up putting way too much faith in future boyfriend who currently does not exist and not enough in our present selves, who very much exist. We think the real fun only starts after you meet someone.

Sorry, but I call bullshit — because I’m having a lot of fun right now.

If you’re single, and you plan on staying that way until you meet “the one,” then you’ll probably stay that way for, I don’t know, ever? Sure there are people you’re more compatible with than most (and those are definitely the ones you want to date), but no one is perfect. There won’t be this one guy who meets all 8 million of your standards and then some.

But there will be guys. Tons of imperfect, but still super cute guys. And guys are fun.

So don’t sell yourself short on thinking that you can’t enjoy life until you’ve found your partner in crime. Be your own damn partner in crime and go live an adventurous life.

Besides, it’s a hell of a lot more fun than waiting around.
