Robin Thicke and Paula Patton announced their separation this week and dropped a love bomb on the entire world. Sure, they had problems — most notably, Thicke's very public, very sloppy flirtations with other women — but they were always so loved up and looked so oversexed that no one suspected any real trouble brewing.
Still, there were issues behind the scenes, and apparently a breakup was looming for a while.
"It has been a long time coming ... Their marriage was unraveling for a long time," a source close to Thicke said, while another added, "It is not a shock to Robin or Paula, and it is something they have discussed for a long time."
Maybe Thicke, who boasted that Patton likes to "play groupie" for him in the bedroom and who says their marriage is "overspiced," doth protested too much, but if these two can't make it, who can?!
Here, we've rounded up 20 celebrity couples who would break more than each other's hearts if they ever split.
President Barack Obama and FLOTUS Michelle met when they were among the few African Americans at their law firm, Sidley Austin -- Michelle even mentored him! They married in October 1992 and have two super cute girls, Malia and Sasha -- and they still dance (and fistbump!).
When asked how they keep it romantic, Michelle chuckled, "We try to do date nights; it's a little tough. Barack has a 20-car motorcade, men with guns, the ambulance is always there. How romantic can you be?"
After an on-again off-again courtship that began in 2002, Prince William and Kate Middleton got engaged in October 2010, with Wills slipping his late mother, Princess Diana's, signature ring on Kate's finger. The couple celebrated their royal wedding on April 29, 2011 ... though Middleton's sister Pippa pretty much stole that show just by bending over.
Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani met in 1995 when Bush and No Doubt hit the road together. They married in 2002 and welcomed son Kingston in 2006, followed by Zuma in 2008. Those aren't Rossdale's only kids, though -- a paternity test revealed that he's the father of British model Daisy Lowe after a brief relationship with her mother, Pearl, in the '80s.
It appears Rossdale got around back then, as he also confessed to an "experimentation" with British singer-songwriter Peter Robinson, who went under the stage name Marilyn.
Still, he and Stefani have stuck it out -- and they even have another son on the way!
Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum met on the set of dance flick Step Up in 2006 and have been doing the (Your)Tango together ever since. They got engaged in 2008, married in 2009 and welcomed daughter Everly Elizabeth Maiselle in 2013. They're so gorgeous that they really do make us believe in magic. Especially in Magic Mike.
Giuliana began dating Bill Rancic in 2006 after interviewing him for E! News. They tied the knot in 2007 and welcomed their first child, Edward Duke Rancic, in 2012 via a gestational carrier. The pair had trouble conceiving, but it was a blessing in disguise: When a doctor recommended Giuliana get a mammogram, she discovered she had breast cancer -- which she beat!
Emily Blunt began dating John Krasinski in 2008 following a three-year relationship with singer Michael Buble -- who got busted cheating on her (yikes!). Krasinski proposed in August 2009, and they got married in Lake Como, Italy on July 10, 2010. Their first child, daughter Hazel, was born on February 11, 2014.
Krasinski gushes about Blunt constantly. He's said, "So many people say, 'You know when you know,' and it's true. It's all true." Another cute quip? "I had always heard, 'Never date an actress -- it's too competitive, too dramatic,'" he said. "But we're so lucky to have each other. For many reasons, Emily is perfect for me."
Matt Damon had a series of high-profile romances (Minnie Driver and Winona Ryder, anyone?), but it was a bartender who stole his heart! He met Luciana Barroso when she was serving booze in Miami in 2003. Two years later, they got married in a civil ceremony in New York City. They've got four adorable tykes and seem like one of the most grounded couples in Hollywood.
How do they stay so close? Well, they literally stay close. Damon explains, "We have a two week rule. I'm not away for more than two weeks. I think you need to be with the person you love as much as possible. My wife is my soul mate. I don't like being apart from her." Aw!
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos first dated onscreen in 1995 in All My Children, where they starred as Hailey and Mateo. They eloped a year later ... while Consuelos was living on AMC co-star Winsor Harmon's sofa. Harmon was one of the very few to know that Consuelos and Ripa were dating, let alone married!
Now that they have three kids and Consuelos is a regular guest co-host on Live! With Kelly And Michael, we think the world has it figured out by now.
Garner's Alias co-star Victor Garber officiated their wedding in summer 2005, and since then they've welcomed three kids. Garner explained, "My husband is kind of a wonder sperm kind of guy. You just have a look at him, you can see why."
Jay-Z and Beyonce have one of the most high-profile relationships on the planet, but they still manage to maintain privacy by choosing carefully what to reveal and what to conceal. They married on April 4, 2008, and welcomed the beautiful Blue Ivy Carter four years later. Bey told Oprah about Jay, "I would not be the woman that I am if I did not go home to that man. It just gives me such a foundation," she said. "We were friends first," she explains. "Before we went on any dates, we were on the phone for a year and a half. That foundation is so important in a relationship. Just to have someone that you just like is so important -- and someone that is honest!"
Sarah Michelle Gellar met Freddie Prinze, Jr. in 1997 while they were filming I Know What You Did Last Summer. They went public with their romance in 2000 and tied the knot in 2002. They have two kids, and Gellar legally changed her name to Sarah Michelle Prinze in 2007 for their fifth anniversary. Cute!
When asked how she makes it work, Gellar replied, "A separate life. I always say I'm Sarah Michelle Gellar when I work and Sarah Prinze in the other life. I don't know if there is a secret — if I had a secret, I'd write a book and retire. But we talk. We check in."
Hugh Jackman met wife Deborra-Lee Furness on the set of Australian TV show Corelli, and they married in 1996. (Fun fact: Their engagement rings are engraved with "Om paramar mainamar," which means "We dedicate our union to a greater source." Swoon!) Jackman is a huge romantic and has a very simple mantra for making their relationship work: "Your wife is always right. Very simple. I think I'm going to get it tattooed on my forehead."
Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres met backstage at an awards show and began dating in 2004. They married at their shared home in 2010 and announced in 2013 that they never want to have kids, maybe because DeGeneres is a big kid herself! And that's one of the things de Rossi loves about the funny lady, who made her believe in love at first sight. De Rossi said, "I ran into Ellen at a photo shoot [in 2004] and she took my breath away. That had never happened to me in my life, where I saw somebody and [experienced] all of those things you hear about in songs and read about in poetry. My knees were weak."
Trista Sutter -- then Trista Rehn -- was the very first Bachelorette, and the TV treatment lead to meeting Ryan Sutter. He accepted her final rose and they tied the knot on December 6, 2003 in a televised ceremony -- and got paid $1 million for it from ABC! Sutter explained that self-love was the key to finding true love: "The only way to ensure that they have what they need is to make sure that I can give them what they need -- and that means taking care of myself first. This is not to say that you are more important than those you are caring for, but that you are as important."
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have weathered a lot of storms together, ranging from Scientologists to substance abuse to fertility trouble, and the two Aussies remain adorable. They married in 2006 and are parents to Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret Kidman Urban, as well as Kidman's adopted children with ex Tom Cruise, Isabella and Connor. Speaking of Cruise, Kidman explained, "I was so young. And you know, with no disrespect to what I had with Tom, I've met my great love now."
Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are just so cute, we can hardly stand it. They married in 1982 after 12 years of dating and have three adult children together. They hit a rough patch and split last year, but reconciled five months later to the delight of us all. DeVito said, "[We're] good friends, best friends, we talk to each other every day, we Skype, all of it." Good friend Michael Douglas said of the diminutive duo, "There's a balance to their relationship, and they protect it zealously. There's a magic about them." So. Cute.
The nicest guy in Hollywood? He better have a happy ending! Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson celebrated 25 years together at the end of 2013. Hanks told Ellen DeGeneres, "I'm not one to suck up to the audience, but the only thing we ever argue about is who loves each other more." Squeal!
Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon have been married since 1988, but Bacon revealed they first met when Sedgwick was just 12 years old and he was 19! Don't worry, nothing shady happened -- they got together when they were both in their 20s on the set of a PBS adaptation of Lemon Sky. How do they keep the spark alive? Bacon puts it simply: "Keep the fights clean, and the sex dirty." Ow ow!
We need Jennifer Aniston to finally find her happily ever after! The Friends star and fiance Justin Theroux appear to be the real deal and have been engaged since August 2012. And Aniston agrees, otherwise she wouldn't be part of it. She explained, "I couldn't be in a relationship without equality, generosity, integrity, spirit, kindness and humor. And awesomeness." She's got plenty of that herself, so we're happy she found her match!
Viva Brangelina! The couple first met on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith while Pitt was still married to ex-wife Jennifer Aniston. (We're still side-eyeing him a lil' for that!) But that's ancient history by now -- they've been together almost a decade and have an entire brood of beautiful kids, weathering everything from a double mastectomy to The Tourist as a team. And, uh, just look at them.
Pitt said that despite having an entire litter of rugrats, they still make time for sexy time. "There are no secrets at our house," he says. "We tell the kids, 'Mom and Dad are going off to kiss.' They go, 'Eww, gross!' But we demand it."
