What You Should Be Doing (& Avoiding) During The Full Moon To Make Your Relationships Better Than Ever
Use full moon magic to your advantage.
The full moon has always been a magical, romantic image throughout history — and for good reason! Full moon magic has the power to improve your love life, which is why planning fun things to do as a couple during the next full moon can make your relationships even better, according to astrology.
In ancient times, the moon was much more than a symbol of romance — time was actually measured by the moon's phases: Each month, and also by the thirteen lunations of the year. The earliest calendars were incised bones, sticks, or stones carved with thirteen marks which are now believed to represent the thirteen full moons in the year.
These could also represent women's thirteen menstrual cycles. The rhythms of life were intrinsically tied to the sun and moon’s movement across the sky.
We’ve come a long way from that level of lunar reverence, haven’t we? There’s no denying the powerful influence the moon continues to have in modern times, though. Certainly for women who are cycling creatures, but really for anyone who’s ever been bathed in moonlight.
Luna was the ancient Roman goddess personifying the moon, which of course, is the origin of the word lunar. In astrology, the moon rules over intuition and emotions, and your connection to the subconscious mind. So the full moon represents the full light of your consciousness when emotions at their height. (Where do you think the word lunatic comes from?!)
But the full moon is also considered to be a time of high energy and creativity in all areas of your life. You're likely to give birth to plans made and projects started since the new moon, nurturing them to fulfillment and realization. But it can also be used to increase your love life and relationships, as well.
So, how can you embrace the deeper meanings of full moon magic to enhance your love life?
Here are 5 things to do as a couple during the next full moon to make your relationships better than ever.
1. Plan a romantic walk-and-talk.
Use this time to talk about what you love about each other and what your dreams are, preferably under that beautiful full moon!
Remember, you’re often wearing your heart on your sleeve during the full moon, so why not share it with your lover and focus on all the things you’re grateful for in your relationship.
2. Celebrate the fun/special relationship adventures you’ve shared.
The full moon is also a wonderful time to reflect over the last month and reminisce about the fun dates you’ve had, friends you’ve gone out with, or trips you’ve taken.
Relationship expert John Gottman suggests that sharing happy memories can re-ignite a stale relationship or enhance a good one. Do it on a regular basis, but especially when the full moon is high above!
3. Weed your garden or go apple or strawberry picking together.
According to the Farmer’s Almanac (and gardeners everywhere), full moons are the best time for harvesting. Think of taking that “bringing things to fruition" energy literally.
Not to mention, you’ll keep your garden growing strong, or end up with lots of yummy fruit to share … maybe even dipped in chocolate for a fun little bit of foreplay back in the bedroom.
4. Plan a major "clean out" day.
Take advantage of the high energy that accompanies the full moon and de-clutter. Your house, your office, the garage; whatever space has been overflowing in your home.
In moon lore, it’s believed that the best time to let go and release anything (emotions, bad habits, junk) is when the moon is waning, moving through full to new, so this is a good task to start on the other side of the full moon.
5. Make a baby!
Yes, really. If you read Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent or saw the movie, you know that in ancient times, women gathered together on their “moon time” when the moon was new. This meant that the full moon was when they were ovulating. Of course, with the introduction of electric lights, we no longer cycle together in sync with the moon (except maybe in college dorms!), but it can’t hurt to try!
On the flip side, there are also some things you shouldn't do as a couple during a full moon. Don't forget that the "lunacy" vibe is high right now.
Here are 5 things you should avoid doing as a couple during the next full moon for the health of your relationships.
1. Have deep conversations about what’s not working.
Full moons magnify any emotion, so don’t focus on the negative ones. If the littlest things are setting you off, back away and take a deep breath.
Even if you’re snapping at your partner, take that lovely moonlit walk and agree to focus on what’s going right in your relationship.
2. Start new projects together.
With all the high energy that can be generated by that big, glorious orb, it’s easy to get inspired and go off half-cocked in a new direction. Remember, the creativity that can be inspired by the full moon should be channeled to those areas that you’ve been working on for the last two weeks since the new moon.
If you’re itching to launch a new project, wait after the next new moon when the moon is waxing (growing) again.
3. Make big decisions.
Emotional energy is high right now. It’s typically not a great idea to make life-changing decisions if you get emotionally charged in the light of the full moon.
Weigh all of the considerations, then sit on it for a few days and see if you’re still in the same place.
4. Go out for a wild night on the town.
That may be exactly what you feel like doing under that brilliant full moon, but you should just be super-vigilant about where you plan to go. Don’t head to risky, high-crime areas. There are actually now some studies showing that crime increases around the full moon — something that hospitals workers and police have been saying for years.
So, have fun, but stay away from questionable areas of town.
5. Over-indulge in food, drink, or exercise.
Again, this one is easy to do when that expansive full moon energy is egging you on. Whether you go to a fancy restaurant or have a meal at home on your moonlit deck, don’t be tempted to overdo it. Especially if you’re planning on some yummy lunar love-making afterward — that’s definitely on the “approved” list of full moon aerobic activity!
Understanding the overall effect of the full moon on your psyche and emotions can be super helpful when managing your life and relationships. But the truth is, some people are simply more affected by the lunar cycles than others, or some months may trigger you more strongly.
If you’re fascinated by the notion of being guided by this powerful lunar energy, get yourself a moon cycle calendar and track your responses over a few months — some of the lunar calendars are pretty enough to hang up on your wall. Then, you’ll really be able to plan your full moon activities and recharge your love life!
