Country Singer Maren Morris Expecting First Child With Husband Ryan Hurd
They met while writing a song for Tim McGraw.
Whether or not you’re a fan of country music, you have to admit that these musicians are incredibly talented at what they do, especially female country singers. With big names like Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Miranda Lambert, and Reba McEntire, it’s hard not to be impressed by their energy.
But there’s another singer whose vocals blow us away: Maren Morris. The Texas singer-songwriter got her breakthrough with her single “My Church” in 2015, and was later nominated for four Grammy Awards, winning one. She’s released two albums altogether, but has written songs for Kelly Clarkson, Jessie James Decker, Bridgit Mendler, The Henningsens, and Tim McGraw.
In fact, it’s because of Tim McGraw that her life changed forever. Country singer Ryan Hurd and Morris met in 2013 when they wrote a song for McGraw, titled “Last Turn Home,” in Nashville.
They remained friends, and eventually began dating in 2016. Hurd proposed to Morris in 2017, and they tied the knot in March 2019. And now they're expecting a baby! Who is Maren Morris’ husband?
Of their relationship Morris revealed:
“We were both at different publishing companies, and our publishers’ job is to fill our calendars up, so they just randomly put us together on a write one day. It was the start of a wonderful writing relationship. It’s one of my favorite songs that we’ve ever been a part of.
It’s just crazy to look back on that moment where we were both just songwriters, solely, and that song has held so much weight over the years. The meaning behind the song actually means more now to me and Ryan, in a weird way — years later, it sort of hit us what the song meant.
We had been friends for only a couple of years, but there was always this writing chemistry in the room, and eventually, the timing of it was undeniable. We had such a foundation built off writing so many songs over the years that we were like, ‘Why are we avoiding this?’”
Hurd is a singer-songwriter just like his wife. He wrote “Lonely Tonight” for Blake Shelton and Ashley Monroe in 2015, and in 2017, signed to Sony Music Nashville. He’s released three EPs and three singles, and has toured with Chase Rice, Thomas Rhett, and Morris.
Of his career, Hurd said on his website, “I kind of have already done everything in country music, and I’m still a brand new artist. I’ve written hit songs, I’ve been to all the awards shows with Maren Morris, and I’ve gotten to tour with Thomas Rhett and Florida Georgia Line. It’s sort of like I’ve already experienced what it means to be an artist in Nashville.”
And now, just a few months after celebrating their one-year anniversary, the couple is expecting their first child!
The couple took to Instagram and Twitter to announce the good news, revealing their future child to be a boy. She captioned it, “The irony is just too rich that after a year of living in the ‘GIRL’ headspace, the universe would give us a baby boy to even things out. See you in 2020, little one.”
Hurd also posted his own announcement, saying, “MY BOYS CAN SWIM. BABY BOY HURD 2020! Look at her...cannot believe this life with this girl. Also, thank you George Constanza for this caption that I’ve been sitting on my entire life.”
Morris has been open about always wanting a family. In 2018 during a Twitter Q&A, she responded to a fan asking her if she plans to have kids. She said, “I literally have it blocked out on my calendar next year.” She also jokingly captioned a photo of her and Hurd with “gonna have your babies.”
She later said she should have considered the caption before responding. But she also added, “If you’re gonna get married, you have to have those talks beforehand anyways, and I definitely know that I want a family, and he would be such an amazing dad; he’s such a kid himself. I love his family, and he loves my family, so we’ve definitely had those conversations, and they’ve been really fun and exciting.”
All of this came after the couple hit a rough patch in their relationship. In a March 2019 interview with Esquire, Morris revealed she and Hurd went to couples therapy after a tour began to strain their relationship.
“It was probably the hardest part of our relationship. We went on our honeymoon, and then I immediately went on this gigantic tour opening for Niall Horan. It was more international touring than I had ever done. And I was gone more than I had ever been on any other tour.” In an effort to improve herself on a personal level, they sought therapy.
As she stated, “For my own mental health, as I go deeper and deeper into this world of music, I need another outlet besides writing songs to get out what I’m feeling. It was a tough summer, but we have grown so much closer because we had to make some hard decisions and have some tough talks about what this future looks like and how we can make this better. I have always loved him, but I feel like I like him in ways I never knew I could before. He’s always been the guy to come to me. Now, I'm gonna have to be the girl coming to him.”
Congrats to the happy couple!
