Bombshell.

We all would like to assume that politicians have the same beliefs and values at home as they do in office, right? If only it was that simple.

Again and again, stories about politicians reveal that their stances on political and moral issues don’t always align with their actions in their personal lives.

The most recent hypocritical politician is Pennsylvania’s Congressman Tim Murphy, who allegedly suggested his mistress have an abortion during a pregnancy scare.

In September, Murphy publicly admitted to having an extramarital affair with Shannon Edwards, a forensic psychologist who was also married.

“This is nobody’s fault but my own, and I offer no excuses,” Murphy said in a statement a few weeks ago when the affair was first outed. “To the extent that there should be any blame in this matter; it falls solely upon me.”

Here are the 5 biggest bombshells about Tim Murphy's affair with his mistress, the abortion request and his hypocritical pro-life stance.

1. Murphy is, and always has been, against abortion.

Until his mistress thought she was pregnant.

The pro-life Republican with eight terms under his belt co-sponsored the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act earlier this month, a bill that would ban abortions in the United States after 20 weeks. He was also a member of the Bipartisan Congressional Pro-Life Caucus.

His Twitter and Facebook pages are full of pro-life statuses — and that's what finally caused his mistress to confront him.

2, The mistress Shannon Edwards allegedly confronted Murphy via text message.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Edwards texted the congressman saying he had “zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options.”

3. The affair was hidden until the mistress's divorce records were unsealed.

The scandal was discovered after the divorce case between Edwards and her former husband, Jesse Sally, was unsealed.

It began in 2016 and went on for 6 months. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said Murphy called it “an affair with a personal friend,” while Edwards insisted it was a long-term relationship that wasn’t serious until she and her former husband had decided to separate.

4. Murphy is resigning because of it.

The congressman has never held back expressing his stance on abortions until he had an affair with Edwards. Now, he wants to resign from the position he’s been in since 2003.

Murphy announced his resignation effective Oct. 21, 2017.

“After discussions with my family and staff, I have come to the decision that I will not seek re-election to Congress at the end of my current term,” Murphy said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Although he did not say why he was not seeking re-election, one can only assume the affair with Edwards and the media attention around his abortion stance at least partly contributed.

“It was Dr. Murphy’s decision to move on to the next chapter of his life, and I support it," House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said in a statement. “We thank him for his many years of tireless work on mental health issues here in Congress and his service to the country as a naval reserve officer.”

5. Secrets rarely stay secret when you're a politician.

I guess when your affair is thrown out it the open, other secrets come up, too. By now, politicians should be well-aware that their personal lives are of high interest to their constituents and the media. It should come as no surprise that their secrets and transgressions usually come out — there are journalists who focus on digging this dirt up for a living. And mistresses rarely stay quiet after affairs with married men.

One thing's for sure, if Tim Murphy didn’t realize all this before — he certainly does now.
