If there is ever any good reason to spend $782 on yourself all at once, a heart-shattering breakup tops the list. You were wronged! You deserve to do something nice for yourself. But really, are we so materialistic a society that doing something nice has to entail spending a ton of money?
A new study says yes, and that the average woman spends just that — $782 — putting herself back together after getting dumped. Of the 2,000 recent dumpees polled, more than half said they nursed their post-breakup misery by treating themselves to new haircuts, wardrobes, makeup, mani/pedis, gym memberships and even spray tanning.
"Being dumped, whether it was on the cards or not, will make even the toughest woman feel awful … This research shows that women start to question what went wrong with the relationship, and feel self-conscious about their looks," says Simon Comins, the study's head researcher.
According to the study, 75 percent of women say their post-breakup splurge was totally worth it, and I would feel the same way. After a traumatic breakup, anything that makes you feel like a new person — whether it's a new look, travel or a sexy rebound dude — is pretty fair game. Just make sure you're okay with your bank account suffering a bit.
