Shelley Skas (LCPC,NCC)
Making a decision to enter therapy is something that most people take on with a great deal of thought. Who needs help? Everyone needs help at some point in their lives. When? Well that depends on how you feel about what’s happening to you. Some people ponder issues for a long time before they’re ready for something to change. Other people are incredibly impulsive and look for help as soon as the warning signs show up. We’re all different in this regard.
But what I know is that the moment you’re ready, you’re ready. And that’s where I come in. Lots of people ask me why I got into this field: You want to listen to people’s problems all day long? Actually yes, I do. I see myself as someone who is trained to listen to just the right parts of a conversation so I can help you pinpoint what’s really causing your pain, and take some quick steps to change things.
My specialty is kids and families. I’m a mom; I know what it’s like to live in a chaotic environment with no time for you and more to do that you can imagine. And I know what happens when families start to break down; when one person becomes the “problem” and everyone tries to fix it. Working with families means understand the glue that holds everyone together and how it gets fractured when there’s pain in one person’s life. I help families get back together, whatever that ultimately ends up looking like.
I’m also a wife who knows the complicated nature of marriages and relationships. Look, none of this is easy; if we had working manuals to tell us what to do most of us would follow them. Working on dating, marriage and relationship challenges is critical to keeping families intact and modeling healthy examples for our kids.
So if you’re struggling, I’m here. My team is here. And we do it all. Families, individual work, couples you name it. If you’re looking to feel better; to stop suffering and start living the life you know you deserve take a moment and give us a call.
Oh and we’re qualified too… licensed in counseling, offices in Orland Park (outside of Chicago) and holding Type 73 certification in school counseling. We take insurance and work with private pay clients as well and if you’re asking clinically, our areas of expertise are emotional and behavioral problems.

The Reason I Became A Helping Professional
If you’re the parent of a troubled teenager or youth, we can help you.
Kids are amazing. From the moment they are born, they change our lives forever. They also have the power to affect the entire family unit with one mood swing or belligerent comment. For struggling families, trying to make sense of a troubled child can be incredibly frustrating. But there is hope; help your kid find a solution to their issues, and the family as a whole can get back to normal.
How can you tell if your child is in need of help? Kids in pain have an uncanny way of showing us that something is wrong. For younger children, we often see behavioral challenges: potty training, inability to keep to school routines, challenges learning to listen, sit still or follow directions.
For older kids, we see emotional challenges as well: sadness or dramatic mood swings, trouble fitting in with friends, struggles to be popular or find a boy/girlfriend or even manipulative behaviors with parents and teachers.
As a parent, it can be overwhelming to manage and understand it all. That’s where we come in.
At The Healing Center at Silver Lake Gardens, we specialize in counseling services for children, teenagers and families. Healing Center kids not only learn to make sense of their feelings, they also learn how to manage their behaviors so they can reconnect their families and get back to the joy of being a kid.
