I have been a practicing clinical social worker specializing in work with children and families for 25 + years. My passion is to support parents and educators to be more psychologically sensitive to children and to enable children and adults to make wise choices in their personal behavior that helps them to function more successfully and feel happier.
I provide individual and family counseling, parent workshops and parent coaching, pre and post divorce consultation, as well as my Peaceful Celebrations program that supports families planning life cycle events after divorce, trauma, or loss.
Participants at my worshops over the years have especially liked my down to earth approach, specific strategies and interventions, and sense of humor. Highlights of my workshops provide a glimpse of my professional presentation style. This approach has also been appreciated by the college students I have taught at Kendall College in Evanston, Il (where I taught in the Human Services Dept.) and by those at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Il. (where I am an adjunct professor in the early childhood department).
The Reason I Became A Helping Professional
A pivotal memory of mine is of my first day of kindergarten, and I believe this memory has significantly influenced my choice of career. I couldn't wait to start school, as my brother was a few years ahead of me. But I had had no preschool experience, and on the first day of school I was terrified and bereft when my mom left me in my classroom. I tearfully asked the teacher when we would go home, and she answered impatiently, "I don't tell crybabies!" I know that that experience helped me later choose to focus on supporting teachers and parents to be more psychologically sensitive to children, so that other children would not have to experience such an emotionally unsupportive response!
Additionally, my parents had a difficult divorce when I was in college, and the fallout from that reverberated for years in my life. I know that that experience led me to want to help parents plan and manage their divorces and co-parenting in ways that lessen the pain for their children.
