Hello and thank you for taking a moment to read a bit more about me. My name is Melanie Gorman and I am the Senior VP of YourTango Experts.

Like most of the other professionals here, I went to undergraduate and graduate school.  I have a master's in counseling psychology and worked for several years as a relationship counselor and coach. 

In 1999, to supplement my private practice I started teaching a workshop created by Dr. John Gray, author of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus that specifically gave singles the tools needed to be more successful in the dating process. Those workshops were a gem for me both personally and professionally.  I was single at the time, and really teaching the skills I needed to learn. I put the same skills into practice in my own life and they led me to my relationship with my husband.

Professionally, John told me that in the two years I taught the workshops, I had taught more singles to date than anyone else in the organization.  A great feat indeed! This work lead to a conversation in 2001 where I was asked to join John's team and create a "coaching program" based on his body of work. 

Consider that coaching in 2001 was nothing like it is today and working on this avant garde methodology was light years ahead of its time. I worked with a small team to create the curriculum for the Ask MarsVenus Coaching program and soon became the Director of Operations for the MarsVenus sites.

My two worlds collided to bring together the academic training of a classic counseling background and the mentoring and daily work with the "king of pop psychology".  For Expert's today, there are many gems to learn from my experience. My time with MarsVenus taught me the daily operational needs Experts have when bringing their business out of “one-to-one” services and into “one-to-many”, how to create virtual income to either supplement, reduce your practice or even consider retiring.

In 2009, I came to YourTango to help their visionary team create our Expert's platform. In addition to my daily work building the program and talking/mentoring members, I also coach Experts on how to evolve their business to its next level so they can do more of the work they truly love.

The Reason I Became A Helping Professional

When I first started out, I couldn't imagine a different profession than the one I'm in. Helping people is both instinctive and natural to me.

Over the years I have learned that there is a time and place for everything and when someone is genuinely ready for change, I am honored to be the one there to help and assist. I know that the person I'm helping with is doing all of the work and that they are the one making changes. My job is to guide, encourage, support and lead towards change, but the real work is done by the individual.

I can honestly say that it's a privilege to work in this field. After more than 15 years, I wouldn't have it any other way.
