About Barbara Becker Holstein
Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein is the originator of THE ENCHANTED SELF(R) a positive psychology method for increasing happiness. She has been a positive psychologist in private practice and licensed in the states of New Jersey and Massachusetts since 1981. She is in private practice in Long Branch, New Jersey with her husband, Dr. Russell M. Holstein.
The magic of the human spirit, with its capacity for survival, growth and joy, has always intrigued Dr. Barbara. As years went by and her practice grew, she longed to explore women's psychological development even further–specifically how to overcome obstacles and bring pleasure into our lives while living a life of meaning and purpose.
She began to document certain steps necessary to rekindle our talents, strengths and lost potential which she teaches and has labeled The Enchanted Self. Her research on women (not in her practice) initially focused around the negative messages that these women had received in childhood from their families and environment. However, she soon discovered that there was a magical capacity within these women to reinvent themselves in adulthood even with childhood experiences of internalized negative messages.
Taking this information back to the treatment room, Dr. Holstein discovered that her clients thrived when she helped them glean from their memories what was positive in their past, rather than focusing on the negative elements. She also discovered that affirming her clients’ talents, coping skills, interests, longings, wishes, and even dormant potential, ultimately led to each client flowering, regardless of real problems and issues. She has helped many, many clients and the public overcome adversity and discover that life is worth living. Her methods help women have more positive emotions while understanding how to cope with daily living, so that it is indeed a good life. Mental health combined with a true understanding of how to retrieve and recreate positive states of being again and again are top goals for Dr. Holstein.
Dr. Holstein is committed to bringing to women everywhere methods to access their Enchanted Selves. These methods shared in the Seven Gateways To Happiness have brought insight and inspiration to countless women. Happiness takes work, but no more work than living a life without hope, repeating negative thoughts and habits that lead to a life that feels less than inspiring.
Dr. Holstein's latest book is a fast paced fiction novel for women, Next Year in Jerusalem: Romance, Mystery & Spiritual Awakening. Enjoy a roller-coaster ride of romance, mystery, intrigue and travel that will entertain while giving the reader lots to think about.
Her book The Enchanted Self, A Positive Therapy was published in 1997 by Harwood Academic Publishers and is now in its second printing through Brunner-Routledge. This book is Dr. Holstein’s pathfinder book in the field of positive psycholgy in which she outlines treatment techniques, two years before the term positive psychology was even coined!
Her second book Recipes for Enchantment, The Secret Ingredient is YOU! has received rave reviews as a wonderful inspirational story book with space to journal. Women love to keep the book on the night table or kitchen counter, for an emotional pick-me-up.
There Comes A Time In Every Woman’s Life for DELIGHT is Dr. Holstein’s third book. This book takes the reader on a spiritual adventure with Dr. Holstein. Reader’s love this book, getting to experience first hand celebrations and adventures that rekindle their own spirit of adventure. In two versions, paperback and a CD-rom version that includes music, art, and Dr. Holstein’s voice, either is sure to be a ‘Delight.’
Her book, The Truth, I’m Ten, I’m Smart and I Know Everything! is another first in positive psychology-perhaps the first positive psychology fiction book for women. Written by an eleven year old girl as a diary, Dr. Barbara has imbedded lots of positive truths that we all need to remember and live by, regardless of our age.
The girl’s edition, a best seller on Amazon: The Truth, (I’m a girl, I’m smart and Iknow everything) debuted February 2008. It has been translated into Chinese and Vietnamese. Edited for girls, with a special introduction, and questions just for kids, the book is a great read for kids and their moms.
A sequel to The Truth is now available: Secrets: You tell me yours and I'll tell you mine...maybe.
Geared for girls also, the girl is growing up and continues to share her feelings, and daily life issues with the reader. Great for discussions, as the girl tackles everything from getting her period, to a serious crush, moving, family fighting, a death in the family, moods, etc.

Barbara Becker Holstein Success Stories
'The Locket', a play based on The Truth by Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, played successfully on Broadway May 20, 2015
As a positive psychologist and author it is very exciting to now be a playwright. 'The Locket' just had its third staged reading, this time at the Dramatist Guild on Broadway! Yes, there I was on Broadway! The four actors were great: Ashley Griffen, Cassidy Terracciano, Shereen Hickman and Chris Kateff. Once again I was able to bring the Girl to life, with the help of a great director, Bob Angelini. The girl, I believe represents all of us. This time she came to life via the development of a play.more
In the last few years she appeared in several versions of The Truth, the most popular being The Truth, I'm a girl, I'm smart and I know everything. More recently she appeared in a new updated version of The Truth, published by Sky Pony Press and now called The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween.
Who is she? Perhaps you can best answer that if you read The Truth or go to You Tube and see some of my clips from the play versions. For starters, I believe she holds within her a lot of stuff that is in all of us. She's up, she's down, she's inventive, she's fun. She figures stuff out, but people can disappoint her. She falls in love. Love disappoints her. Her parents bother her. They fight.
