Eco-friendly ways to love, both in and out of the bedroom.
We here at YourTango love to love. But, now that Earth Day is fast approaching, we can't help but wonder: can we sustain love while also loving the Earth? According to experts such as Ethan Imboden, the founder of Jimmyjane, and Stefanie Iris Weiss, the author of Eco-Sex, the answer is a resounding yes. After all, when we're good to the environment, we tend to be—by extension—good to our bodies. And when we're good to our bodies, others take notice. Celebrate Earth Day: 5 Tips For Outdoor Sex
Need some more convincing? According to Weiss, the Human Toxome Project, spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group, conducted six studies in which they measured the amount of dangerous, toxic chemicals present in a person's body. They found 456 industrial pollutants, pesticides and other chemicals in the blood, urine and breast milk of 115 people of all ages. So if you're not interested in going green for the fabulous sex, go green for yourself. How? Here are four ways to go from single and sickly to eco-friendly and in love.
1. Find Mr. Doing It Right. Looking for someone who's as into keeping it green as you are? Thanks to the age of Internet dating, there's a niche site for every interest group, including the greenies. Some that are worth checking out include EcoDater, Evolver, Green Speed Dating, Natural-Friends and Raw Food Friends. You can also use sites like Meetup to find other like-minded folks.
2. Make yourself pretty… and toxin-free. Weiss asserts that the best way to go green is to go DIY, and she even includes some recipes in her book. It takes just a little bit of effort and, at times, is even cheaper than your department-store skincare brands. You can read Eco-Sex to get the lowdown on the ingredients you should be avoiding in your beauty products but, just FYI, you can find truly green products at online shops like Farmaesthetics, RMS and Weleda.
Also, remember to eat healthy. You'll look good and feel even better, especially if you use natural aphrodisiacs. Engine-revvers for women include artichokes and avocado, chocolate, soy and more. (No one ever said that eating right couldn't taste good.) For men, use spices like cayenne, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, in addition to other ingredients like watermelon, peaches and pineapples.
Finally, be active. Exercise like yoga can help those suffering from physiologically or psychologically-based sexual imbalance, and improve flexibility, organ health and toxin levels.
3. Go out on an eco-friendly date. We love the idea of cooking together, and this activity can be especially erotic and intimate if you make an effort to use some of the organic aphrodisiacs mentioned above. If you're not ready to have him over, however, consider going biking or hiking, or take him on a volunteer date.
