The Most Comforting Breakup Foods

What are the most comforting  breakup foods?  Candy, chocolate, ice cream, any sweets?  Or, better yet, what type of meals do you prefer to eat after a big breakup? Do you head straight for the carbs, or look for healthy meals with lots of vegetables because you want to lose all of the weight you gained during your two year relationship?

In addition to cheesy enchiladas, I also love chicken Alfredo. Okay I am hungry now. I know you aren't supposed to use food as a crutch, but seriously. Who doesn't? I also work out more after a break up so I figure it all balances out.

Directions for Monday Meatloaf:

Meatloaf:

1½ lbs ground beef (20% fat)

½ lb ground pork

2 eggs

½ cup milk

1 tsp onion powder

½ tsp celery salt

½ tsp ground black pepper

½ tsp garlic powder

1 tsp ground mustard

1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

¼ tsp dried thyme, crumbled

¼ tsp rubbed sage

1 tsp salt

2 medium carrots, shredded fine (or process in food processor until resembles breadcrumbs)

1 cup dried breadcrumbs (plain)

Sauce for Topping:

½ cup tomato catsup

2 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp Dijon mustard

Pinch (or more, depending on your taste for spice!) cayenne pepper

3 slices cooked bacon (cooked through, but still limp, not cooked crisp)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Crumble beef and pork in a large mixing bowl and set aside.

In a small mixing bowl, combine the next 11 ingredients and mix well with a fork so that eggs and milk are thoroughly combined with spices. Add the egg mixture to the meat and mix gently with a fork to disperse the egg mixture into the meat. Add the breadcrumbs and carrots and combine all ingredients thoroughly -- your hands are the best tool for this job! Once the meatloaf mixture is combined, shape it into a loaf in a 9 x 13 inch shallow baking pan. Shape the loaf with your hands to resemble a loaf of bread, but do not let the meat touch the sides of the pan (this will allow the meatloaf to brown beautifully on all sides and will give the fat space to drain away from the meat). Bake in a 350 degree oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the meatloaf is cooked through (165 degrees).

That is a complicated recipe. WOW.

That looks good, I will have to try it!

I hate meatloaf! I really like onion rings and ranch dressing as a comfort food.

Posted: Fri, 11/14/2008 - 9:37pm

A giant juicy hambuger...or just a big mac.

I try to sway friends away from eating after a breakup. However if you do have to, the way we have all had to binge through our emotions. i love haagen daz, chocolate chip cookie dough or cookies and cream. pepperoni pizza combos, spagettini and meat with sauce with melted american cheese and ranch dressing on the side. Yummy! However we should try to avoind the break binge or hit the gym during the binge.

macaroni and cheese. total comfort food.

Posted: Fri, 09/26/2008 - 4:00pm

pop corn! pop corn all the way. and movies, like sad romantic comedies. cheesy, i know, but nothing is better than a good bowl of buttery pop corn, home made of course, and a movie where you can cry even though you know its stupid.

Posted: Thu, 09/25/2008 - 11:37am

I don't know about popcorn, but the movie part seems to be true! I have many friends, many males, who watch sad movies to deal with their emotions. I haven't gone through a breakup for a couple decades (!) but I never used to be able to eat a thing.

hahah, funny question. i actually never really ate comfort food, though. i tend to try and get out or do activities, like go running. i think a better question is how do you get over a breakup?

Posted: Thu, 09/25/2008 - 11:35am

Spaghetti bolognese. And probably red wine.

Posted: Thu, 09/25/2008 - 9:47am

Seriously? What about vodka? I can't eat after a breakup.

Posted: Wed, 09/24/2008 - 6:24pm

ICE CREAM all the way. But it MUST be chocolate.

Posted: Wed, 09/24/2008 - 4:59pm

No brainer. Ice cream.

Posted: Wed, 09/24/2008 - 4:55pm

Definitely used to be chocolate, but now I think I'd have to go with a bottle of red wine. That's very comforting.
