single mother
A politician wants government officials to marry single moms.
Good news, for all the single mamas in Kelantan, Malaysia: a state representative wants local legislators and magistrates to marry you. According to AFP, the chairwoman of the state's family and health committee thinks that dudes with good, stable jobs should up their "quota" for wives. "Quota" meaning the number of wives these stable dudes are cool with having.
The problem that requires polygamy as a solution is that there are too many unmarried, single mothers in Kelantan, and throughout Malaysia. As you likely know, Malaysia is a largely Muslim nation (55 percent of its 28 million residents). … Read More
Let's open with a disclaimer, so that when the gay "community"...
Let's open with a disclaimer, so that when the gay "community" fires back at me with an indignant spank, they will recognize that I am family, and that my opinion does not come from the outside looking in. Not that they will be any more tolerant of my criticism because of it but, in the very least, they will know that I am on the same team and speak for many others like me who are sitting on the bench watching the parade go by.
I am a lesbian and the single mother of a teenage daughter. I am open about … Read More
Differing opinions on how detrimental divorce may be for both the parents and the children.
Coming from a divorced family, I have spent my life questioning the idea of a life-long commitment. Most of the adults I know have been divorced at least once, and of the couples who are still married, most of them (along with their kids) appear miserable. And so, while I would love to find a companion whose company I will enjoy "'til death do us part," I've learned from observation that this just might not be a realistic goal. And is it so horrible to think that maybe we weren't supposed to spend our entire lives with … Read More
With the opportunities available today, it's up to women to take charge of their own happiness.
Earlier this week, New York Times columnist, Ross Douthat, wrote an op-ed piece about how feminism has made women increasingly unhappy over the last 30 years. Despite being wealthier, healthier and better educated than they were a generation ago, women in post-feminist America aren't as happy as they used to be. He suggested this may have something to do with the number of women "stuck raising kids alone," a "depressing" lifestyle that's much more common among women in the lower socioeconomic class. This hardly explains why so many wealthy women in East Hampton are so miserable, though, … Read More
Judgment on case delayed until Friday, court battle presumably wages on.
Well, like Denise Richards, it’s evidently complicated. Madonna’s adoption of 3-year-old orphan Mercy James has not yet been approved. The pop star spent an hour in court in the Malawi capital of Lilongwe on Monday where a judge delayed ruling on her adoption application until this Friday. No further court records of the proceedings are available but we understand that Madonna faces much opposition from multiple parties, including the child’s own grandmother, who has told Britain’s The Sun, "Why doesn't this singer pick other children? It is stealing. I want to go to court. I won't let her go." … Read More
A divorced mom takes on the tricky situation of introducing her son to her boyfriend.
I waited five months before introducing my boyfriend, Andy, to my 3-year-old son. All the books and advice givers, including my therapist, suggested we meet at a public place; I chose the Children's Museum of Manhattan and invited my mother to come along as a buffer.
Up to that point, Andy and had I spent every weekend exploring each other's bodies and temperaments, talking endlessly into the night as you do when you're first dating. Conversations never seemed to falter; our want for each other was constant. After a difficult divorce, the attention made me feel alive … Read More
The Bachelor Jason Mesnick hints at what he's looking for in a second wife.
Besides the fact that never has a racial minority appeared as the Bachelor or Bachelorette on ABC's long-running reality show, we continued to be surprised by contestant Jason Mesnick's choices on last night's episode. Things that would make us sweat (not in a good way)—like being prepared to move cross-country for someone you've known for 48 hours—seem to make this guy smile. Here, a list of things this Seattle-based single dad likes in a lady:
1. I Want You To Want Me. In episode two, Jason admits he's all about the women who want him and aren't afraid to show it—even … Read More
One woman's dating history is mapped in her closet.
This is a story about a dysfunctional relationship. It was between me and my bedroom closet, and I know you know what I'm talking about.
The closet was full and I was empty. Every time I opened the door, I encountered someone I no longer cared about, an outgrown, repetitive personality. Like most of us, I had the requisite work stuff in there, which fell into the category of more (summer wool suit) or less (brocade sheath) mandatory and was therefore defensible in some way. But the play clothes, the rows and piles of stuff that I relied on to reflect … Read More
In a bizarre twist of fate a Michigan woman found herself working at the...
A Michigan-native finally ended his search for his birth mother… at the cash register of the store he works at. Steve Flaig has been searching on and off for his birth mother for four years and he found out that she worked at the same Lowe’s that he did just outside of Grand Rapids, Mich. Evidently, his mother Chris Tallady gave him up for adoption because she was not ready for single parenthood. And now they’re reunited and he’s getting to know his two half-siblings.
The only way to make this story better would be for the … Read More
A single mom describes her path to motherhood.
I was ready for kids at age 28—and well aware that women's fertility starts to plummet at 35. When I saw my doctor that fateful year, she asked me if I wanted children. "Yes," I replied. "Definitely." With a stern look, she snapped, "Well, you're not getting any younger!"
Thanks for the news flash, I thought. What kind of idiot does she think I am?
I was a romantic, procrastinating idiot, to be exact. Despite my clear intellectual understanding of the issues involved, it took me until age 38 before I seriously started thinking about single motherhood, and even … Read More
