Exclusive! 'The Mindy Project' star discusses her own love life and "charming" guest hunks.
When we last saw Mindy Lahiri before The Mindy Project went on hiatus, things were decidedly looking up for the lovelorn gynecologist: The episode ended with her in mid-kiss on an airplane with fellow doc Danny (Chris Messina) and the two will continue to tryst in secret at work when the show returns tonight.
In real life, Mindy's mother, Dr. Swati Chokalingam, was the obstetrician/gynecologist in the family. Sadly, Mindy's mother passed away in 2012 from pancreatic cancer. Here, the 34-year-old actress, comedian, writer, and producer opens up about the wise words her mother shared, her off-screen dating life, and more:
YourTango: How does your real love life compare to your character's?
Mindy Kaling: My love life on the show is so good with these charming guys. I feel like I've learned from the best: Tina Fey has had Jon Hamm and Jason Sudeikis. This is what we can do when we have our own show!
YourTango: And off screen?
Mindy Kaling: I'm too into my own self right now.
YourTango: I'm a sucker for a man who ...
Mindy Kaling: Is funny. It's boring but it's true.
YourTango: What's the best love advice you've ever received?
Mindy Kaling: My mom always used to say, "You can't say I love you before you can say I." And I think that sort of makes sense.
YourTango: Do you believe in love at first sight?
Mindy Kaling: No. I believe in attraction at first sight, not love at first sight.
YourTango: Do you believe in 'The One?'
Mindy Kaling: No. I don't believe in the old-fashioned, romantic soul mates. I like the notion of it and seeing it in movies, but I don't believe it's true.
