Did a split lead to Alexa's suicide attempt?
Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, was hospitalized in New York Saturday night after an overdose of homeopathic anti-inflammatory pills, and friends say she was upset by a breakup as well as stressed over her parents' rocky romantic relationships. Alexa, 23, and Jimmy Riot, the former bass player in her band, dated for several years before breaking up almost a year ago, and the split devastated her.
"She was coming up on the first anniversary of their breakup," a friend of Alexa's told the New York Daily News. "I don't think they talk that much nowadays, but she still thinks about him." Jimmy, whose real name is James Elliott, is 38 and produced Alexa's 2006 debut album, "Sketches." On Sunday, he told photographers outside his Brooklyn apartment he didn't know how Alexa was doing. "I respect Alexa's and her family's right to privacy," he said.
In addition to her own romantic woes and attempts to build a music career, Alexa has been a confidante to both of her parents as their marriages struggled. Billy split from his third wife, Katie Lee, who is just four years older than Alexa, last summer, and Alexa testified in court in 2008 about her mother's divorce from and ongoing custody battle with seedy architect Peter Cook. The song "Now It's Gone," on her 2006 EP, is about the Brinkley-Cook disaster. Christie Brinkley On The Offensive
Alexa was released from the hospital today and is recovering at home. An NYPD source said that according to a friend of Alexa's, the overdose was definitely a cry for help, if not a suicide attempt. "She said [Alexa] had taken pills and was feeling despondent. She said she wasn't feeling good about herself," the police source said. We just hope she's feeling much better soon.
