Singles feeling Manic-Depressant Blue (or Gross Brown, for that matter) will likely feel uplifted logging in to CasualKiss.com, a quirky online dating site and community with blogs, webcams, and, to quote the Canadian mind behind the madness, "other crap." Relaunched in 2003, Casual Kiss takes the cake for design: users can customize the background color of the site ("Manic Depressant Blue" and "Gross Brown" are two of them; Love Buzz settled for "Imasculine Purple").
The clever tone of the site spills over the design elements, evidenced in each profile, which calls for longitude and latitude (instead of height and build) and ganja-smoking habits ("midnight tokers" and "nicely baked" members are welcome on the site). There are plenty of open-ended answers, such as "My therapist describes my personality as:" and "To get my lover hot, I:". Under "Media Stuff" users can reveal what they read "on the can," what their "DVD is usually spinning," and what their "Jukebox beats to."
Profiles also include an insanity test (ink-blot included!) and a purity test, the results of which classify users' "lusty purity" as (strangely) republican/conservative, "super friek" promiscuous, plain "frieky" or playful. As you may guess, the questions are pretty personal, so users can chose to keep their scores private or public. You can then use the results to screen members using the spam application, a saved search which that lets users hide from other members. Profiles are also pretty, well, pretty! Users can use basic HTML to add color—and music!—to their page.
Users can find each other by searching, or through the Casual Kiss community, which includes clubs (such as Southern Ontario Singles, or Young Tarts For Old Farts), categorized message boards and Casual Kiss-hosted blogs of other members. While many sites are far from forthright when it comes to the actual size of their community, Casual Kiss posts its stats right on the homepage. As of election week, 2008 there were 129,501 active members.
Other cool features include: submitting photos to be rated as "hot or not", sending an e-card, earning (seemingly useless) points for posting events, writing blogs, or uploading photos and reporting a secret crush without fear of rejection.
Best part: Casual Kiss is quite possibly the cheapest subscription yet: $5/month or $14.95/year. Now that's a deal!
