Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Self

Each of us has our own “comfort zone” which, more than an actual place, is a psychological/emotional/ behavioral feeling that defines the routine of our daily life. Being in one’s comfort zone implies familiarity, safety, and security. Creating a comfort zone is safe, but often inhibits your growth potential.

If all you ever do is stay wrapped up in your little cocoon, keeping warm and cozy, you may be missing out on quite a lot….no new experiences, no challenges, no risks and little personal growth.  Looking at the bigger picture of life, if you can’t step out of your comfort zone you may have difficulty making change or transitioning, growing, and ultimately creating the life you want.

Very simply, what we fear most about challenging ourselves is that we may fail and/or get hurt in the process. Yet, most of us can rise to the occasion, overcome hurdles and obstacles, and succeed in accomplishing something new and challenging.

Well, I have stepped out of my comfort zone and have written my first book!  This is something I have been talking about for years…always “I will do that someday” …but never actually taking action.

I was safely embedded in my warm and secure coaching comfort zone.  Last Christmas my daughter, Christine, gave me a beautiful journal with the inscription, “For new beginnings.  Notes for your book”.

That got me thinking.  Could I really do this…really write a book?  But how do I do that?  I received the answer from the Universe almost immediately.  “Yes, you can write a book, do you want help?”  My resounding answer was “YES, I want help!”

As Esther Hicks always says, “Ask and it Is Given”.  Shortly thereafter I started receiving emails from Chandler Bolt’s Self-Publishing School.  Sometimes the Universe works so fast, it’s a little scary. I signed up and began to crawl out of my comfort zone…step by step.

Each day I sat down with pen in hand, getting into alignment and asking the Universe to help me with my words.  I wrote about my life and how the Universe had been guiding me long before I even realized it.  This led to my discovery of 5 steps that assisted me to create the life I wanted.

There were bumps along the way, much laughter, some tears and many lessons learned. The journey was, and still is, a fun-loving adventure.  I won’t lie, I was scared at first, but by taking one step at a time, I succeeded.   I got to check off another item on my bucket list.

Your “real life” is out there waiting for you, it exists beyond your comfort zone. Challenging yourself pushes you to dip into and utilize your personal store of untapped knowledge and resources. You have no idea what you’re made of until you venture outside of your own familiar world. Baby steps can get you started.

Taking risks, regardless of their outcome, are growth experiences. Even if you make mistakes or don’t get it right the first time there’s always these experiences you’ve had to tap into for the future. There is no such thing as “fail” if you got something out of the experience. Let’s think of “FAIL” as “first attempt in learning”.

Don’t settle for the status quo just to avoid stepping out of your comfort zone; it’s too big a price to pay. Every time you try something new, allow yourself to be open to whatever experience arises, you are learning, and expanding.  As you do this you are also expanding the size of your comfort zone. It’s so cool how that works!

Make small changes that are not too emotionally challenging. We are all such creatures of habit. Change your daily routine. Try something new---food, music, activities you’ve never done, like in my case, writing a book. Undertake a creative project of any kind where your thinking is channeled in a whole new way. Add newness to your life. Be open to experience.

Life is so much more fulfilling and thrilling when we set a goal, work with the Universe to achieve it, and enjoy the fruits of our labor along the way. This only happens when we get out of our comfort zone. Who is ready to join me?
