About Pamela Monday

I'm a marriage and family therapist practicing in Austin, Texas.  While working on my master’s degree, I had a job in a drug and alcohol treatment facility.  I ran groups, and did family therapy, and realized I loved helping people grow and change.  But I also realized I didn’t know nearly enough.   I entered a doctoral program at the University of Texas.  I was married to the love of my life, and had two small children.   I had no idea what I was getting into.

Fast-forward a couple of years, and with all of the stresses, and no tools, the marriage dissolved.  We went to three different therapists, but no one could teach us what to do differently.  As a single parent, living at the poverty level, going to school and working, there were so many times I wanted to give up.  But I knew that this was my calling in life, to get the education and experience necessary to excel and be the best therapist I could be.

When I studied family systems, I knew that would be my focus.  We are each a product of what we learned in our family of origin, and those lessons impact what we think, feel and do in every relationship.  Understanding that legacy is crucial to making sense of our lives and how we live it.   I love with working with women, helping them become the empowered, confident women they are meant to be.  Then I learned how to teach people to talk to each other, rather than about each other, and that’s when I also began to specialize in doing couples and family therapy.  I also became known in Austin for working with recovering alcoholics, adult children of alcoholics and their families.

What I became the best at was not only helping people understand why we do what we do, but I learned how to teach people what to do differently so that change was not only possible but highly likely.   I did extensive training in the Imago method of couples therapy; that model is the best I’ve ever seen for helping couples find hope and make lasting changes to reduce conflict and resurrect the passion and intimacy they once had.  How I wish I had had access to Imago therapy when my husband and I were struggling.  I am committed to helping as many couples as I can learn how to make their marriages strong and healthy, and give them what my husband and I were not able to find.

I have taught supervision classes, taught “Getting the Love You Want” couples workshops for 25 years, and have supervised dozens of new clinicians.  I have taught adjunct classes at local universities, and presented at the best marriage and family therapy conferences in the nation.  I have written many articles and a book, and am currently working on several other writing projects.  But my passion still is teaching people the skills they need to improve themselves and their relationships, build confidence and self-esteem, and find greater happiness and satisfaction in life.   I’ll help you set goals, and give you the tools and skills to reach those goals.  There is nothing we cannot accomplish in life if we have motivation, skills, direction and support for our dreams.

A P.S. about my husband.  For twenty years, we had no contact.  But two years ago, he got very ill.  I was able to reconnect with him, to let him know that I had long ago forgiven any real or imaged hurt, and I prayed that he had forgiven me.  We cried and hugged, and for the last three months of his life I was there with him, along with our sons, and we experienced some mighty wonderful healing.
